At BVIS Hanoi, we believe in the power of community and the transformative impact of education. Our commitment to service learning and community engagement has led to remarkable outcomes, not only for those we serve but also for our students. We talked with Mr. Piers Roderick. Assistant Head of Secondary and Lead Teacher of Service Learning about the story of our flagship initiative at the Floating Village in Hanoi (Xóm Phao) and how it has become a beacon of hope and change.

Can you tell us a bit about the programme and how you measure its success?

Our flagship initiative began in 2021, integrating service learning into the curriculum. Students not only learned about reducing inequality but also gained practical experience creating real change. A strong relationship blossomed with the village, located along the Red River. The village lacked necessities like clean water and electricity.

Since our involvement, the village has seen incredible improvements in education, economy, and social well-being. This is a clear indication of the initiative's success and has led to BVIS Hanoi becoming the lead partner in numerous projects across Hanoi.

How has this initiative benefited everyone involved?

Community engagement has benefitted everyone involved. Students built the village's first library, collected books, and repaired houses. They also installed a solar power system and a local waste collection system. Additionally, they improved agricultural land and built a playground.

Students developed leadership skills and intercultural awareness, while our partner, Think Playgrounds, benefitted from collaboration. Together, we received requests to lead other initiatives, including building Hanoi's first sustainable forest park.

Sustainability seems to be a core principle. How does your initiative address that?

Our initiative stands out for its focus on sustainability. The partnership with Think Playgrounds aims to provide residents with a sustainable living space and education. This project is a first in Hanoi, with the whole community working together.

The focus on sustainable practices aligns with Vietnam's goal of net zero emissions by 2050. Our work was recognised with a Social Impact Grant in 2022, which is being used to build a new safe road and improve the water system.

Facing challenges is inevitable. How did you overcome obstacles in the Floating Village?

The sheer size of the task was our biggest obstacle. Many villagers had lost jobs due to the pandemic. We addressed this by working with them to maximize their crop yield, providing food and income for the village.

Educating both students and locals was crucial. We created a programme to highlight the benefits of transforming the land from a dumping ground to a sustainable agricultural area. Students played a key role in educating others through their own programme.

Can you elaborate on your service-learning programme?

At BVIS Hanoi, we believe students play a vital role in their community. Our community service programme is a core part of the curriculum, with all students from ages 2 to 18 actively involved.

We follow the Service-Learning approach, providing students with practical experience through a "Think, Feel, Do, Reflect" cycle. Students regularly return to the village, building strong relationships and ensuring the project's long-term sustainability.

Is this sounds like BVIS Hanoi is a central hub for community activities?

We strive to be! With all our students engaged in community activities, BVIS Hanoi has become a central figure in community initiatives. We are the go-to school for charities and NGOs seeking support. We partner with organizations like "Keep Vietnam Clean" and host clean-up events.

We also open our doors to the community throughout the year, fostering connections between students and locals. Examples include celebrating Tet Festival together and partnering with the Khuong Dinh Elderly Club.

Students have even created a homeless initiative, collecting and distributing essential items. This initiative has led to partnerships with local food banks and cafes.

What is the lasting impact you hope for?

BVIS Hanoi deserves recognition for its Community Engagement Initiative. We have directly impacted thousands of people, with the Floating Village serving as a shining example. Our work has inspired other schools to establish their own service-learning programmes.

This initiative is just one of over fifty currently taking place at BVIS Hanoi. We are committed to continuing our positive work across Hanoi for years to come. Our students graduate not only academically prepared but also well-rounded, caring, and empathetic individuals, ready to make a difference in the world.
