Dear Parents

What a wonderful end to the term we have had. 

Last week I had the pleasure of attending the Secondary Production ‘Rock of Ages’ an amazing performance by some extremely talented students.

Primary hosted their Christmas assembly and it was full of joy, singing and smiles, a great event.

On Monday evening our secondary students wowed the audience at the Metropole Hotel leading the show for the tree lighting ceremony. A very prestigious event.

I joined the staff to enjoy singing Christmas carols on the steps outside Primary.

On Tuesday, we had a very successful Christmas market run by Secondary students. All staff and students from Secondary, Primary were impressed by the festive atmosphere of the event.

On Wednesday secondary hosted their academic awards ceremony and there were so many incredible achievements to celebrate

And finally, today it was a pleasure to see the Secondary School pantomime and the end of term assembly. What a great finish to the week and to the term.

Finally, I wish you all a very happy holiday with lots of family time and lots of joy. School starts back for students on Wednesday 10^th January.

Progress in developmental milestones

As Term 1 ends, BVIS Early Years celebrated all the children’s many achievements in a special award assembly. Every child across the Early Years has made progress in their developmental milestones. Some children have developed socially, some children are now communicating with language and some children have demonstrated a school readiness. Even the smallest of steps move us forward in life. Well done Early Years for all your hard work and play, rest well over the holiday ready for Term 2.

Demonstrating learning

Year 1 had a busy week participating in a variety of exciting events. At the beginning of the week, the children had the opportunity to share their stories with Year 2. Midweek, they took part in various activities with their parents during the Exit Point. The children confidently demonstrated what they had learned in English, Vietnamese, IPC, and STEAM subjects during Term 1b. Finally, they concluded the busy week with an impressive Christmas performance.

Teamwork, communication and problem-solving skills

Year 2 continued to show great teamwork, communication and problem-solving skills using time connectives to order events from their morning routines.

They were also very excited to play vocabulary games to learn new action words!

School Values: Reflection & Communication  

This second half term, the students have been learning about dinosaurs in the IPC unit Footprints from the Past. They Looked at facts and theories about why the dinosaurs became extinct. They created artwork inspired by what we think the land looked like when dinosaurs roamed the earth. They found out how fossils are used to gather information about different dinosaurs and looked at the features of different types of dinosaurs. 

In English Literacy, they wrote setting descriptions, describing what it was like when dinosaurs roamed the earth. They were very happy and proud to present their writing to everyone in Year 3 Exit Point and created amazing 3D cretaceous dinosaur environments. 

School Values: Reflection & Communication

In the IPC unit What’s on the Menu? the students have been learning about how food is prepared and where different ingredients come from, how food is grown, and how to talk and write about food. They planned and wrote texts instructing readers on how to gather ingredients and prepare them to cook a dish. They learned how to use professional design tools and designed restaurant menus. They learned about how to make various Vietnamese dishes. They applied features and writing techniques of Explanation Texts in their writing. They were very happy and proud to present their writing to everyone in the Year 4 Exit Point.

Space Science

Last week, Year 5 continued exploring their Space Science theme, choosing carefully which exoplanet would be best to live on. They looked at the physical features of the planets and weighed up their options carefully.

Making the News

Last week, Year 6 had a really successful exit point celebrating everything they’ve learned during the Making the News IPC unit. It was great to see family members come in and help produce striking artworks, collaborate on online challenges, and explore our learning.

Throughout this term we have exposed our students to activities that have showcased their commitment to innovation and hands-on learning experiences. At the heart of our endeavours lies a profound belief that exposing students to diverse, real-world challenges fosters not only scientific knowledge but also critical thinking, teamwork, and adaptability.

One remarkable project that encapsulates this philosophy is the Fungi Sampling Project in collaboration with the University of Sydney. Last June, a representative from the University shared a wealth of knowledge about microorganisms, with our students. The students were then tasked with collecting fungi samples from different locations around their home, which would then be compared to samples across Vietnam, delving into the intricate diversity found both in urban and rural settings.

Global Campus Student Leaders

Congratulations to Mai Linh (10I), PhucThien Nhi (10I), Ngan Ha  (9V) and Ngoc Minh Chau (9B) for being elected as the BVIS Global Campus Student Leaders for 2023/24!

The Student Leaders will be working closely with the schools Global Campus Lead to design, create and promote Global Campus activities throughout the school, and will have access to leadership training courses throughout the school year from Global Campus.

Global Campus User of the Month

Congratulations to Ngoc Minh Quang (7B), who has won this month's award for most usage on the Global Campus platform! Each month the student in the school with the highest usage on Global Campus will receive a certificate from Mr. Ogden (Global Campus Lead) and will receive 5x Enquiry House Point

Global Campus International Film Festival

This popular competition allows new and budding film makers of all ages to make a short video to showcase their talents in either a narrative, documentary, or animation style! The theme for 23/24 is ‘Digital Connectedness Across our NAE Family’. From pressing one button, we are in touch with people around the world in an instant. Through film, students are encouraged to share their take on how we can, or might, connect across our NAE family using technology.

There are three main categories (Documentary, Narrative and Animation). Students must choose which category they will enter for the Film Festival and teachers need to specify which category the students have entered.

The films must be no more than 500MB, and the preferred file type should be Mp4. For Documentary, the video should be no longer than 6 minutes, for Narrative, no longer than 5 minutes, and for Animation, no longer than 2 minutes.

All entries need to be submitted to Mr. Ogden on or by Friday January 19th, and the school winners will be judged by a panel of staff and the Global Campus Student Leaders. The winning entries will then be submitted to be judged in the global round.
