One of the benefits of having two NAE schools in Hanoi is that we can collaborate on initiatives and share staff to run activities and events for both schools. As you know BVIS already runs an annual summer school that is open to both sets of families attending BVIS and BIS. In return, BIS will be offering some Saturday morning CCA for families from both BIS and BVIS. Please see attached link HERE further details. Kindly note that the CCA is applied for students from F3 and will be held in BIS campus.
The power of 10
In keeping with our 10 year anniversary, each week we will be sharing 10 good reasons why our school is great. Today I am sharing 10 good things about Primary at BVIS, read here:
10 good things about Primary at BVIS
Partnership with Parents
Working in partnership with parents is so important in the Early Years when children cannot always voice their needs or explain their learning. The BVIS Parent Teacher meetings are another opportunity for parents to see what has been going on in the classroom and how the children are learning. Thank you to those parents who came this week, and we look forward to seeing the rest of you next week. Here is an example of children’s engagement and this week’s learning in the EYs.
Constructing a Story Map
During Vietnamese and English, the children in Year 1 have been creating their new story by constructing a story map and completing the writing section by altering characters and story settings. Afterward, they have the opportunity to share the story with their friends in pairs.
School Value: Enquiry
Year 2 continue to show excellent enquiry skills in their IPC topic ‘Super Humans’. They enjoyed learning about different parts and functions of the human eye. They were amazed to find out how our eyes work!
Year 2 also enjoyed experimenting with ‘cup telephones’ to test how sound waves are affected by different variables. They made great predictions and were surprised by some of the results. Super enquiry and teamwork skills were shown!
Volcanoes, Forests and Dinosaurs
Year 3 have created their own story map to describe a setting. We have chosen to describe the Jurassic periods, filled with volcanoes, forests and dinosaurs! The students have produced some excellent descriptive writing.
School Values: Enquiry and Respect
In the context of the Vietnamese language theme "Explanatory Text" and the IPC topic "What's on the Menu?" Year 4 had spent time exploring famous Vietnamese dishes. During the Vietnamese language class, the students worked together to practice making "Phở Cuốn" (Vietnamese fresh spring rolls)!
From tasks such as picking herbs, preparing dipping sauce, slicing eggs, and preparing Vietnamese pork sausage, to rolling the rice paper, the students actively participated and gained hands-on experience!
The teachers were very impressed with the skillfulness and carefulness of students! It was especially delightful to hear the students share that this class was extremely interesting, and they felt very excited about the activities in the classroom!
Space Scientists
This week Year 5 have been working hard to prepare for their Space Scientists exit point and assembly – they're really excited to perform the songs they’ve been learning and share the learning from this unit when their families come in at the end of the week.
Debating Skills
This week Year 6 have been working on debating skills in their IPC lessons, prepping hard and researching facts to support their arguments. There’s been some great work on formal and informal speech, and the best way to present a claim and back it up.
School value ENQUIRY and CARING
The graphic novel ECA are starting to produce some amazingly illustrated stories. They have planned their stories to be between 5 and 8 pages in length, and they have been working on designing creating panels which have variety and impact. There are a huge variety of stories within the ECA, some linked to Christmas, some telling Pixar-inspired stories about animals and some which link to LGBT and identity. Students have been working hard to produce their pages and are striving towards really high-quality artwork!
School value GLOBAL CITIZEN
For World Children's Day, our English and EAL classes studied the poem 'The Rich Eat Three Full Meals' by Nguyen Binh Kiem and had a go at writing their own poems about inequality inspired by what they read. Here are some fantastic examples from our talented year 7, 8 and 9 students.
School value ENQUIRY
Students in Year 13 have been learning about different approaches to HR Management and they were given a fantastic talk by our Assistant HR Manager, Ms. Thanh. She gave them real life examples of how BVIS has applied soft and hard approaches to management and the students showed great engagement and asked real pertinent questions throughout. Ms. Thanh was able to show a careful balance is needed when approaching HR and that decisions made can vary from the employee in question to the scenario at hand. Students took a lot from this and have reflected that there is no single course in how to manage effectively but it should be adaptive to the different scenarios.
School value PERSERVERANCE
In EAL year 7 made a presentation about a special celebration. They were all speaking confidently in English in front of their classmates. One student who barely spoke to her in English before, bravely presented all in English alone as his members in his group were on a service-learning trip. Well done!
School value PERSERVERANCE, ENQUIRY and RESPECT
During their ECA the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh students have been doing some team building by building spaghetti and marshmallow towers
