We only have five weeks until the end of the school year, but, as in all schools, the last few weeks are full of exciting events.
Continuing our ongoing collaboration with Juilliard, we were delighted to welcome Jeffrey Holbrook (Trumpet) and Jason Crimi (Trombone) who visited the school and gave performances to our Primary school students and most Key Stage 3 classes. They delivered some workshops to some music classes where students heard more fantastic brass performances and were even able to have a go themselves. It was a fantastic day that the students seemed to really enjoy – particularly when they heard the theme from ‘Avengers:Endgame’!
Last weekend was the first round of this year’s World Scholar’s Cup. Ms Bower, who helps to organise this activity has written the following:
The BVIS World Scholar’s Cup team performed excellently at the Hanoi Regional Round last weekend with every team qualifying for the Global Round this September in Manila. This year’s theme was ‘A World on the Margins’. We took 9 teams and 5 excellent Year 9 student coaches. They participated in four events: Team Debate, Collaborative Writing, Scholar’s Challenge, and Scholar’s Bowl at the Vinschool Harmony and Hanoi National Economics University. It was led by Ms Bower and Mrs McKie with support from Mr Lincoln and Mr Whiffin. Students participated in four events: Team Debate, Collaborative Writing, Scholar’s Challenge, and Scholar’s Bowl. The competition was particularly tough but all our students excelled, particularly in writing and debate: Phu Minh Do was awarded School Top Scholar. Van Anh was chosen as one of 8 delegates to join the debate showcase out of 500 plus students. Well done Team BVIS!
Also last weekend, Mr Widemann took our largest cohort of students to the Hanoi Activities Conference Swimming Championships, hosted by UNIS and many of the students recorded personal best times - so well done to all who took part.
My thanks to Mr Croft for taking a KS3 team to the Science Kahoot Competition - a Science-based general knowledge competition at Hanoi Academy last week. One of our teams came second out of all the schools in Hanoi - all of the students worked really hard to prepare for this and all had a great time.
Thanks also to the Maths Dept, especially Ms Robertson for organising a fabulous KS3 Maths Competition last Thursday The students had to combine reasoning skills, mental calculations, spatial awareness and lots of running! It was fantastic to see the students showing great reasoning skills in the duel round – where students challenged their partner with mental calculations.
Finally, I would like to congratulate our teachers for reaching the quarter finals of the BBGV Hanoi Football Cup competition - undefeated in all of their group games they were unlucky not to make it all the way through to the final. My thanks to Mr Lincoln for organising this.
