The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) recently published a report Global Citizenship Education: Topics and Learning Objectives and it is reassuring that Global Citizenship is now starting to be seen as a major part of a good education. At BVIS, Global Citizenship has been one of our core principles since the founding of the school as demonstrated by its central position in our Aide Memoire.
The UNESCO report identified 3 core conceptual dimensions of global citizenship education and we teach these concepts on every day of the school year. You can find some examples from the last week below.
Cognitive:
To acquire knowledge, understanding and critical thinking about global, regional, national and local issues and the interconnectedness and interdependency of different countries and populations.
I wrote to you this week to inform you about the launch of Project Penguin and at the heart of this project is the environmental issues that affect everyone in the world and how we will only be able to improve the environment by all countries acting together to address the issue.
Socio-emotional:
To have a sense of belonging to a common humanity, sharing values and responsibilities, empathy, solidarity and respect for differences and diversity.
Miss Wild’s article this week focuses on Mr Stanier’s assembly last Friday that addressed some of the big global issues facing the world and the responsibilities that we all face in ensuring that the world is a better place to live.
Behavioural:
To act effectively and responsibly at local, national and global levels for a more peaceful and sustainable world.
This week, our Eco-Warriors have taken responsibility and a leading role in ensuring that the school improves its environmental footprint by ensuring that we do not waste energy. I personally now have a chart on my door encouraging me not to waste energy or else I will be reported by the Eco Warriors! We all have a part to play.
Have a great weekend.
