Just before TET, the Key Stage 4 boys and girls were involved in the HAC Basketball Finals.
The girls were involved first off against Olympia in their semifinal. Despite the girls having no substitutes they gave an incredible performance. With Olympia able to substitute their players every few minutes to bring on fresh legs, it was very difficult for our team to keep up with the pace of the game. That said, they kept up with Olympia on the score board and narrowly lost the game by 1 solitary basket. Both Mr Jon and I agreed that this group of girls despite their loss have shown tremendous endeavour, determination and resilience, all of which will serve them well in all enterprises, academic and extracurricular.
The boys’ semifinal was against St Paul’s American School (SPAS). This was a most entertaining semifinal. The score fluctuated throughout the game, and none could foresee the outcome. The game came down to the final minute with BVIS losing. Through some good work from Hoang and strong rebounding from Ryan, we managed to overturn the score to be 2 points in the lead with 30 seconds remaining. The team pulled together as they have done all season, worked hard, defended strongly and… narrowly won. The boys suffered the same fate of the girls in the final. UNIS got a bye through to the final due to their opposition not making the event. This meant they had 12 players all with fresh legs. Their energy meant they could outwork and outrun our team. It was an incredible effort by our boys who made it through a tough season all the way to the final. A truly remarkable achievement considering the limited experience of the group! This group has paved the way for future teams to go and make their mark on Basketball in Hanoi.
