My favourite part of teaching is to take a normal standard teaching activity and to try and develop it into a different, fun and engaging activity. I am a firm believer that learning should be enjoyable. With all of my classes my purpose is to instil into my students a love of learning.

Philip Rossi
History Teacher

Philip Rossi is a History Teacher at the British International School Shanghai, Puxi.

Philip Rossi — BA (Hons), PGCE
I began my teaching career in 2002 when I joined the History Department at Lagan College in Belfast. In addition to my academic responsibilities I very much enjoyed the pastoral role I played as a Form Tutor, helping students transition from Primary to Secondary education, to university, and beyond.

In my current role I am responsible for teaching History from Key Stage3 through to IB level. I also have a pastoral role as a Year 7 Form Tutor and I am particularly looking forward to guiding these students in their transition from Primary to Secondary education.

I am passionate about teaching History, and I particularly enjoy the challenge of studying new topics and extending my understanding of world history. I also feel privileged to be able to inspire and be inspired by youthful, enquiring minds, in the pursuit of knowledge and personal development.

Music, art, film, travel, and sport keep me occupied in my spare time.
William Turnbull Walker
Head of History

William Turnbull Walker is the Head of History at the British International School Shanghai, Puxi.

William Turnbull Walker — MA (Hons), PGCE
After university, I initially trained as an ESL teacher as I wanted to see the world, starting with Spain. Later, after working in China for over three years, I returned to the UK to retrain as a secondary teacher. Completing my PGCE, I then taught History at a school in Birmingham. Looking for an opportunity to return to Shanghai, I joined BISS in 2017 as an EAL and History teacher, before taking on the role of Head of History in 2018.

I have an MA in Classics and Medieval History from the University of Edinburgh. After graduating, I completed a Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA). I obtained my PGCE in History through Birmingham City University.

In addition to my duties as Head of Department, I teach all year groups from Year 7 to Year 13 which chronologically covers a period of over 1200 years spanning from the 8th century until the late 20th century.

I enjoy challenging students’ preconceptions through the enquires we choose. For example, an examination of the Silk Road and medieval trade routes might suggest that in many ways the British Isles were at the periphery of the world in terms of importance at that time - something which my own school history education certainly never suggested. I am excited to further develop our local history enquiries, particularly that of how Shanghai changed between 1900 and 1949 - I find this period fascinating and for students at BISS that history is all around them.
Mala Nagulendran
Computer Science/ STEAM Teacher

Mala Nagulendran is the Computer Science/ STEAM Teacher at the British International School Shanghai, Puxi.

Mala Nagulendran — BSc (Hons), PGCE
After qualifying as a teacher and working for a few years in schools in London, I completed what was meant to be just two years overseas, in Osaka, Japan. Since then and almost a fifteen years later, I have returned to London as well as lived and worked in Alexandria, Egypt and then finally, here in Shanghai.

I completed my BSc Hons in Computer Science at the University of Essex and went on to achieve my PGCE at Brunel University in London.

I am currently a Computer Science and STEAM teacher here at BISS teaching Year 7 to Year 9 students and IGCSE Computer Science. I enjoy working with the robots and all the fun MIT challenges organised by Nord Anglia’s Global Campus. I also enjoy being creative with all the multimedia facilities and equipment the school has.

I enjoy all that the STEAM department has to offer here as its well resourced and we are a creative department. I also enjoy organising and leading activities outside of my subject, whether this be organising a fundraiser for the various charities the school supports or working with students to deliver a form assembly. The school has lots to offer beyond academics and its great that students get to experience it all.

My daughter attends BISS Puxi and is an avid explorer having spent most of her childhood living abroad. As a family we love to travel – we also enjoy experiencing all the fantastic historical and tourist sites in Shanghai, as well as the amazing food scene.

Nathaniel Brown — BInfoTech, GradDipEd
I started teaching Computer Science in Australia in 2009 and since then, I have taught various subjects in Australia and Asia with a consistent focus on technology. I have been responsible for introducing Computer Science to multiple Nord Anglia schools. I began working for BISS Puxi in 2018 and helped to improve the School’s Computer Science programme as well as develop STEAM into what it is today.

I am really enjoying learning how to teach 3D modelling using Virtual Reality in the classroom as part of our STEAM programme and expanding its use in other departments. It is interesting to use cutting edge technology before it is part of the mainstream education programme. As far as I know we are still one of the only schools in China that has a classroom set of 6DF VR headsets that uses them in the curriculum.

I am married with two sons who both attend BISS Puxi. Outside of school I like playing board games and travelling to new places.
Rus Ekkel
Head of Film and Media

Rus Ekkel is the Head of Film and Media at the British International School Shanghai, Puxi.

Rus Ekkel — BA (Hons)
I began teaching in 2001 in South London and have since worked in schools across London and Cambridgeshire. I also worked as a tutor to child actors for film and television. Some of the projects I worked on were Harry Potter, Defiance and the TV sitcom Outnumbered. I joined BISS in January 2010 and have grown the Film and Media department from a small room on the English corridor into an exciting creative hub where our students can thrive.

I earned a BA (Hons) from Cardiff University and gained my teaching qualification from the University of Greenwich.

As Head of Film and Media, I help the students learn to become filmmakers, graphic artists and sound designers. I’m proud of the growth of this department; we now have a green screen studio, sound recording room and an exciting teaching room. In our classes, students learn how to express their ideas creatively, how to develop their projects from start to finish, how to collaborate with each other and how to understand the visual language of our modern world. We celebrate our students’ work every year in our annual BISS Film Awards!

It is tremendously satisfying to see students develop their creative skills, grow as young filmmakers while also learning how to understand the increasing role that the media plays in our lives. Seeing students – who often start our course as total beginners – blossom into confident visual storytellers is very meaningful for me.

My two daughters and wife are the lights of my life and sharing time with them is a total joy. I also love Premier League football, exploring film, TV and music and go swimming whenever I can.

As Secondary Head of Drama I teach all Drama classes from Years 7 to 13, as well as taking the lead on our annual whole secondary musical and several smaller productions throughout the year.

My favourite thing about Drama is that students can build a whole host of different skills, without even realising it is happening! I love to see students working creatively and collaboratively, becoming more confident when they present work and thinking more deeply about the different perspectives of people around the world.

I am the co-founder of Hangzhou Repertory Theatre Company and have acted in and produced several shows and events in the city as well as being a regular improvisational comedy performer. When I have time, I also take aerial silks, aerial hoop and Chinese language classes.

Deborah Ferreira — B.Mus.Ed
I started teaching Music in South Africa in 2008 before moving to China to teach at the start of 2013. I took up the role of Head of Secondary Music at BISS Puxi, Shanghai in 2022. I have experience teaching across various different exam boards to EAL students from many countries.

I studied at the University of Cape Town for my Bachelor of Music in Education.

I teach across many different year groups at the school and I enjoy the challenge of moving between the years as I get to know students at every level. As a department, we are focused on working closely together to ensure active music making is a consistent feature of our lessons across the year groups in the Secondary School.

Students bring their own musical experiences to class and I relish the opportunity to expose them to different genres of music as they discover new favourite artists. Teamwork is another aspect of teaching Music that is a highlight for me. I enjoy the process of guiding a group of young musicians in working together towards creating a performance.

I love to travel and am enjoying the chance to explore China while I am here.

Lisa Wrynn
EAL Teacher
Lisa Wrynn is an EAL Teacher at the British International School Shanghai, Puxi.
Lisa Wrynn — BSc (Hons), Med, CELTA

I started teaching EAL in Ireland in 2009. I began teaching adults with a focus on Business English and IELTs prep, but having always wanted to work with younger learners, I began teaching in Secondary Schools shortly after. I’ve previously held roles as a Guidance Counsellor and EAL teacher in Ireland and British curriculum international schools in the UAE and now China.

I studied for my Bachelor’s Degree in Business and Management at Technological University Dublin. I then completed my CELTA qualification at The Language Centre of Ireland and received my Master’s in Educational Guidance and Counselling from Trinity College Dublin.

I currently work as a teacher of EAL in the Secondary EAL Department at BISS. I teach EAL to a variety of students, of different nationalities and with varying levels of English. It is my job to help them reach the next stage of their English language development so that they can access the curriculum more seamlessly. I am also a Year 7 Form Tutor. I work to ensure that my form class and their parents can count on me for support whenever they need it, particularly with the transition from Primary to Secondary School.

I’ve always been interested in language acquisition and I find it’s a subject that lends itself well to lots of interaction, variety and you can be as creative as you like when introducing new language points. The biggest draw for me though is that I get to learn so much about my students’ lives and their preferences so I can use that to create lessons they enjoy and become more immersed in.

My husband and I are both teachers at BISS and our two children, Amelia and Jack, attend BISS Primary School. At weekends, I enjoy going on adventures and exploring Shanghai with my family, running, baking and tucking into a good book in the evening when the children are asleep.

Maria Pantasoulas
Head of Secondary EAL
Maria Pantasoulas is the Head of Secondary EAL at the British International School Shanghai, Puxi.
Maria Pantasoulas — BA (Hons), PGCE, MA Education

I started teaching English as a foreign language in Greece in 2001 and have since worked in three international schools in Korea and China. I joined BISS assisting with IELS and then in 2012 working as a full-time EAL teacher. I also took on the pastoral role of Head of Year with Key Stage 4 groups.

I have a BA (Hons) in English Language and Literature and a Master’s Degree in Education with a distinction from the University of Nottingham, where I also completed my PGCE.

I currently work teaching different year groups in the Secondary School as well as lead the Secondary EAL department. I am responsible for the Cambridge Assessment Exams that run in our school three times a year and assist with training the Secondary teachers with up-to-date EAL strategies.

My greatest pleasure derives from seeing a sense of accomplishment on my students’ faces as they grow in confidence. I love to interact with them in class through engaging conversations and help to push their English to the next level of learning.

I am here with my husband and two teenage daughters. I like to exercise, read and try new food on the ever-changing Shanghai scene.

Sangduk Bae

Sangduk Bae is a Korean Teacher at the British International School Shanghai, Puxi.

Sangduk Bae — BA
In 2003, I started my career in education by teaching Korean Language, Literature and Essay Writing in Korea. I began work as an IB and IGCSE Korean teacher at BISS Puxi in 2010.

I have two Bachelor’s Degrees - one in Korean Language and Literature, and one in Journalism and Mass Communication. I also achieved a qualification in Korean history, which was a self-taught programme of study.

I teach MYP and IB Korean at BISS, and I firmly believe that these courses, which are different from the Korean National Curriculum, provide opportunities for our students to study independently and learn how to express their ideas logically. I also help Korean students to write their personal statements when applying to Korean universities.

I think that self-directed learning makes students develop themselves further. Therefore, I always encourage my students to ask questions of themselves and motivate them to work hard to find the answers to those questions. Through this, the students make great progress, both academically and personally.

I am married with two sons who both attend BISS Puxi. My children thoroughly enjoy their school life and as a family, we love to learn about China and its culture.

I lead professional development through discussion and analysis of the non-native courses and review each Key Stage’s course to ensure smooth transition.

I like my teaching very much because I am a person who likes different cultures and languages, and our students provide me with this special insight to know them and help them to learn the Chinese language and Chinese culture. I graduated from Waikato University in Hamilton, New Zealand with a Bachelor of Leisure and Sports Studies Degree majoring in Physical Education. I then went on to Auckland College of Education to acquire my Diploma of Teaching (Secondary).

I am a teacher of Whole School Physical Education from Nursery all the way through to Year 11. I also teach Sports and Exercise Health Science as part of the Group 4 Sciences for the IB Diploma Programme. Additionally, I am the Pastoral Leader for our students in Years 12 and 13. This role involves overseeing the well-being of our IB students.

I particularly like working with young people, helping to motivate them to achieve their full potential and individual dreams. I enjoy encouraging students to maintain a balanced and healthy lifestyle through the enjoyment of sport and physical activity.

I have two children aged 12 and 8 years old who attend BISS Puxi. My husband, Benjamin, works in corporate IT. We enjoy spending time together swimming in the summer and drinking coffee in the winter.

LEARNING SPACES

IT'S ALL ABOUT THE LEARNING

Whether your child is a student in the Primary or Secondary School, the foundations for their learning are made in the Early Years.

This area of the school looks different to the regular classrooms in the more senior sections of the school because it is here that we create their future by setting them on the right path for success.

It is here that we provide opportunities for children to explore, evolve and adapt to their ever-changing world inside the school buildings as well as in our outside learning spaces.

It is here where firm foundations create strong and sustainable futures.

LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS

Our brand-new learning environment integrates all areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS).

The areas have been carefully planned to enable the children to explore and learn, following their interests and providing new challenges to extend their skills.

These learning areas enhance the children’s ability to extend their skills in physical, logical, intellectual, social, and emotional spheres through guided self-exploration and self-choice.

AN OUTDOOR SETIING

Using the outdoor environment naturally inspires children to become more physically active, take controlled risks and challenge themselves in different ways.

The outdoor setting motivates children to work together, and problem solve. Students gain the essential skills to manage conflict, communicate their needs, and co-operate with their peers in a warm, safe, and secure environment overseen by our excellent teachers and their assistants.
