In Year 12 DP Chemistry, we have been working on our unit about Bonding. We have been focusing on the Approaches To Learning (ATL) skill of Communication. Some of the strands of Communication defined by the IB are being able to preview and skim texts to build understanding, take effective notes in class, make effective summary notes for studying, and use a variety of organizers for academic writing tasks. In the science department, we deeply embed our ATL skills so that students acquire the knowledge while developing the skills simultaneously. These skills are relevant and transferable to other subjects. Here you can see a student working through a class task of using Venn diagrams, a table, a flow-chart, and a mind map to paraphrase and display her knowledge. She is then empowered to use these techniques when studying for other classes, paraphrase and collect information from other sources, and become more independent in her learning.
