A British International School of Boston middle school student was named the first place winner of the national Math Kangaroo competition last month, scoring higher than thousands of other students in the United States.

Arlan Abzhanov, a Year 7 student at the Boston private school, earned the top spot in Massachusetts and in the United States in the annual mathematics competition.

Arlan, who took part in the competition through the Russian School of Mathematics in Newton, is no stranger to maths success. This fall, he was recognized for scoring in the top 5 percent of all competitors in the American Mathematics Challenge.

The Math Kangaroo Olympiad was held on March 19 in 38 U.S. states and two U.S. territories. The British International School of Boston served as a competition host for the younger levels of the competition, welcoming almost 30 students from our school and the Greater Boston community.

Each year more than 21,000 American students participate in the Math Kangaroo competition, along with more than 6 million other participants worldwide.  The competition aims to encourage children and teenagers to master mathematical skills, testing their maths skills with a multiple choice test, which must be completed within 75 minutes.

Arlan was not alone in his Math Kangaroo achievements. Two other BISB students earned top spots in the national competition.

Anaya Santosh Raikar, a Year 3 student, earned 16th place in the country for her age group. Dennis Davidson, a Year 4 student, came in 10th place in the United States and seventh place in Massachusetts.

Congratulations to all our students! We're so proud!
