Haeon started at BIS HCMC 12 years ago as a Year 2 student who barely knew any English. She has since gone on to graduate this year with 44 points out of a possible 45 in her IB diploma, placing her in the top 1% of students worldwide. During her time at the school she was appointed Head Girl, awarded the IB Learner Profile Award for ‘Being a Communicator’ and had active participation in a number of extra-curricular activities. These experiences alongside the IB diploma programme have shaped her decision to study Liberal Arts (Political Science) at Williams College, USA with the ambition of one day contributing in some way to social justice. Here’s Haeon’s story…
Starting off as a year 2 student who barely knew any english and graduating with an IB diploma, I would describe my time at BIS HCMC as one that was full of warmth and limitless opportunities. Here, I had the opportunity to befriend one of the most kindhearted and charming individuals, to graduate with a group of people who I still regard as family, and to have been taught by one of the most attentive and caring teachers.
I can’t pinpoint the biggest and most prominent achievement but I really enjoyed spending time with my co head students (Steven Vo, Saanya Mishra, Steve Ko) and the prefect team to improve different aspects of campus life. I was also very proud of representing our school at several MUN conferences with a very strong team of BIS delegates. Competing at F1 in Schools with my team (Doppler Racing) was really rewarding as well.
Though the IB Diploma Programme was no doubt stressful and demanding (especially on top of my other commitments), in hindsight, I now feel better equipped for university as an IB student and have enjoyed all the moments frantically editing IAs and essays. It has definitely allowed me to pursue academic fields that were out of my comfort zone and has shaped my decision to go to a liberal arts college that prioritises a diverse academic career.
I’ve learnt not to fear failure and stay committed to my beliefs.
Happy and proud!
I could not thank my teachers enough for the encouragement and support that I’ve received during my time here (especially during sixth form!) I don’t think I’d have been able to achieve anything without their guidance.
I’m not entirely sure of what my specific goals are, but in the long term, I’d like to contribute in some way to social justice and be brave and happy in every step of the way.

My education at BIS HCMC has equipped me with life skills ranging from mastering time management to correctly referencing all my work. I’ve learnt not to fear failure and stay committed to my beliefs.
