We are coming to the end of our Talk for Writing topic, ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears,’ and what better way to celebrate all the children’s hard work than by going on a Teddy Bear’s Picnic.
In Early Years, we are always seeking opportunities to make learning come alive, and to help children make meaning, so a Teddy Bears Picnic was a wonderful way to finish the topic. The F2 children were invited to bring in a soft toy from home for their picnics. We welcomed a wonderful array of ‘teddies’, ranging from small brown bears, to giant orange crabs, and long blue snakes, each with their own fascinating back story. It was wonderful to hear the children talking with their friends and teachers about their soft toys, and using lots of interesting language to describe them.
On the morning of the picnic, all of the F2 children made their own Bear Sandwiches. They used their developing fine motor skills to spread jam or honey onto some bread, before choosing slices of banana, chocolate buttons and raisins to make the bear’s face. The finished Bear Sandwiches looked amazing – the perfect snack for our Teddy Bear’s Picnic!
Once the sandwiches were ready, everyone gathered up their soft toys and set off on an adventure up to the roof on the 4th floor. The children were very excited for their first trip to the roof, and they were not disappointed by what they found: a tranquil, grass-covered area with plenty of space to run around, and a vast amount of toys and resources to explore – the perfect place for our Teddy Bear’s Picnic!
Everyone had a lovely time at the picnic. We ate lots of delicious food, chatted to our amazing friends and had the opportunity to spend time in an exciting new area. And the best part was being able to share the experience with our favourite companions – our cuddly, soft toys.
