It's the summer holidays!
This week Year 6 began their new International Primary Curriculum topic, ‘What a Wonderful World’.
All the children were hurried into the gym as a Typhoon warning was issued. Once there, they discussed what we might do in a typhoon and how we could create an action plan for a Typhoon. The children formed small working parties to develop their ideas and create information posters to ensure that the school community knows what to do in this situation.
We then watched David Attenborough tell us all about how we need to act now to help prevent climate change in preparation for our work on how this is affecting different biomes around the world. We will look at extreme weather around the world, how biomes support different life and how these are being affected by climate change and other issues created by man-kind (such as pollution). Each class in Year 6 will adopt a biome, investigate this in more detail, identifying plants and animals within it and the threats to it and their survival. They will create a presentation for our ‘Change the World’ summit to vie for funding to help repair damage already done and to prevent future damage.
The topic will enable the children to gain a deeper understanding of a specific ecological environment and link this to our Science topic, ‘Classification of Animals’. The children will work collaboratively in small groups and then as a whole class to present their findings in our exit point. They will demonstrate a greater understanding of what it means to be a global citizen and how they can help to make the world a better place for future generations.

Last month we were proud to have three student ambassadors attend this year’s NAE-UNICEF Student Summit, hosted for the first time ever in Houston, Texas from 12 to 19 June 2024. The event was hosted at Nord Anglia’s two schools in the city: The Village School and the British International School of Houston. Houston was chosen as the ideal location for the Summit thanks to being the first officially recognised “Child-Friendly City” in the United States of America.
At BIS HCMC we deliver in school a comprehensive wellbeing curriculum to provide our students with the tools, resources and support to balance their social, physical, emotional and mental health. As part of this, we also look at preventative measures to ensure the safety of our students beyond BIS and equip them with knowledge and skills for both today and their future success in the wider world.
This term we were extremely fortunate to welcome back into school experts from the United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the U.S. Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City’s Regional Security Office (RSO) to discuss more on the topic of drugs and substance abuse with some of our students and parents.
