On the morning of Thursday the 17th of May, Ms Husband, Mr Alexander and 10 of our Key Stage 3 musicians left school at 6.30am to make their way to the airport for their flight to Jakarta, Indonesia to attend the FOBISIA Music Intermediate Festival 2018. It was the week they had been waiting for! 4 students from BIS HCMC flew all the way to Boston to join 25 other Nord Anglia Education students for STEAM Week @ MIT - a unique, five-day long event packed with STEAM-related challenges, learning and adventure at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

At the beginning of March, twelve BIS students travelled from Ho Chi Minh City to Manila, Philippines to compete in the 2018 South East Asian Mathematics Competition (SEAMC). This competition embodies the spirit of communication, collaboration, creativity, critical thinking and cultural competence through the attendance of a diverse range of schools from various countries. This term, Ms Archer, Ms Kerr and myself had the pleasure of taking the Year 12 IB geographers on a fieldwork collection adventure deep into the Dalat countryside. On this adventure the students were able to collect huge amounts of river data for their Internal Assessment and also experience a ‘Geomystery tour’ which offered a different perspective into the impacts of flood plain modification around Dalat. This aims to develop the way in which the students think critically and reflect upon the interrelationships between people and their environment.
United Nations International School Model United Nations (UNISMUN) is a 3 day, annual conference hosted by UNIS Hanoi. With 18 different international schools from all over South-East Asia participating, there were over 300 international students at the event, including 18 students representing BIS HCMC.
In order for our students to benefit from experiential learning, we carefully plan annual trips to provide a range of age-appropriate yet challenging opportunities to develop personal qualities such as leadership, independence, perseverance and a respect for different cultures through community service programmes and of course physical endeavour.
This year saw the British International School, Phuket host their 16th year of the Soccer 7’s Tournament. The biggest one to date, welcomed 1650 competitors playing for 165 teams from 39 international schools, based in 10 different countries – making this tournament a truly remarkable meeting place for Asia's top young footballers, and the international school community.
On 25th November, 12 BIS HCMC students embarked on their Community trip to Ky Quang 2 Pagoda Orphanage in the outskirts of Go Vap district, Ho Chi Minh City.
This year the FOBISIA Games took place in Phuket, Thailand and covered a range of sports including Football, Basketball, Swimming and Athletics. Each and every one of our students used their skills of perseverance, determination and ambition to bring home an unbelievable total of 5 trophies, 47 gold medals, 27 silver medals and 33 bronze medals as well as a host of memories and experiences that will last a lifetime. The 20th annual SEOMUN (Seoul Model United Nations) conference took place between the 9th and the 12th of November 2017. Twenty seven students from BIS HCMC travelled to Seoul for 3 days of competitive debate and discussion on some of the world’s most pressing issues ranging from global warming to religious extremism.
The Geography Department firmly believe that learning outside of the classroom plays a fundamental role in allowing our students to build a deeper understanding and a stronger connection with the world around them, along with appreciating the challenges and possibilities that may impact their lives and communities in the future.

To achieve the highest marks, in the Higher Level Information Technology in a Global Society (ITGS) International Baccalaureate course, students must cite evidence of primary research into the relevant technology, and thus, we have undertaken our first overseas trip as a subject to attend the Wearable Technologies conference in Hong Kong.
