Last Tuesday 17th September our Early Years and Primary students and staff excitedly came together to celebrate Moon Festival. Also known as Mid- Autumn Festival and ‘Tết Trung Thu’ in Vietnamese, Moon Festival is a significant cultural event in Vietnam. It’s held on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month of the year. This is also one of the highlights of international school life here at BIS HCMC as we value and respect the significance and embrace the culture and traditions of our beautiful host country, Vietnam.

This month saw the annual IRONMAN 70.3 Vietnam race return to the beautiful coastal city of Da Nang with more than 1,600 people from 56 countries and territories fighting for a podium position. Amongst the thousands who turned up to compete in these races were teachers, students and parents from BIS HCMC, ready to show Da Nang what they’re made of!

In January 2018, our brand new Early Years and Infant Campus will open its doors, joining together our whole school community in one District 2 setting. This is an ideal location for a majority of our families however, the inevitable downside of this convenient location is the increased pressure on the flow of traffic in Thao Dien.
Culture shock is defined by ‘Internations’ as the deeper cultural differences in mindset, customs and interpersonal interaction that trigger this phenomenon and turn cultural transition into a struggle. How does culture shock manifest itself? How should we deal with it?
The highly successful Anne Frank Exhibition in November was the culmination of the hard work and collaboration demonstrated by a number of organisations, staff, and students from around the world.
This week we meet two teachers, one who has joined us with her family from their previous posting in Cairo, Egypt and the second from the Isle of Wight in the UK. I am happy to report that both have settled in really well to AP1 and a wonderful addition to our teaching staff and BIS community.
For the next few weeks we will be introducing our new staff and asking them some questions about how they have settled into BIS and Vietnam. Moving countries as many of us know is not an easy thing to do, to up root from family and friends, to leave all you know that is safe and secure can be daunting for some but we are delighted that our new staff this year have take the risk and have joined us here at AP1.
