This year the Secondary school have instituted a new program of awards and prizes, that recognize student excellence and commitment to BIS Hanoi.
At a recent assembly, we awarded our top performers in the areas of Performing Arts, Sports, Service, Media and Publications, Debate and Public speaking, and House. Colours Certificates were presented to these outstanding contributors in recognition of their exceptional efforts. Colours are a type of award given to students who achieve personal excellence and who have made significant contributions to school life. Colours are available to all students in Years 7-13 and are nominated by Teachers and Coaches. Students can receive Colours in multiple categories, but only once a year per category.

How Colours work:
The first year a student is awarded a Colour in a category, they receive a “Colours Certificate”. If they meet the criteria again in that category in subsequent years they will receive a higher grade of Colour – this is so that their continued contribution is rewarded.

Geography Update
This week has been busy in our Geography classes. Our students in Key Stage 3 have been busy working on their latest checkpoints and in Year 8, they have been showcasing the work that they have been doing over the last couple of weeks. For our Year 8 students, they have been working collaboratively in groups to come up with presentations on countries of their choosing, with them conducting research on the causes and consequences of whether their countries are densely or sparsely populated.
In IGCSE, our current Year 11 students have started their new unit, looking at coastal landforms and processes, and this week made lego creations to show how some erosional landforms are made.
Great work Geographers!
English
This week we have been completing the IBDP English B Oral examinations. The assessments all went smoothly with students performing to the best of their ability. Oral assessments are now a part of the IGCSE language assessments and both the English A & B IB courses. This is in recognition of the importance of students being able to present their ideas effectively when speaking, as well as when writing.
In order to support the development of students speaking skills, activities and assessments to help students practice and refine these skills are being increasingly incorporated into the Key Stage 3 curriculum. This can be achieved in a variety of ways, some examples are debates and structured discussions, role play, or character based speaking activities, or even traditional formal style presentations. Being able to articulate their ideas first verbally also helps students to organise their ideas effectively and produce more developed and better articulated ideas when writing.
