Secondary School Updates (3 February 2023)

Weekly update from Head of Secondary

Dear Parents,

Let me first welcome all Secondary parents and students back after the Tet holiday. I trust that you all had a fabulous holiday break.

This week in Secondary, we were delighted to host Tricia Taylor, an educational consultant and learning expert. Tricia has been working with the Secondary team in a virtual setting for the last six months, and this week she was finally able to visit our school to work more closely with teachers, students, and parents.

Tricia Taylor is the author of Connect the Dots: The Collective Power of Relationships, Memory, and Mindset in the Classroom (John Catt), and has been a teacher and leader in schools in the UK, US, and Spain for more than 25 years.

In 2015, Tricia founded Tailored Practice to pursue her passion for making educational research more accessible to educators, youth, and parents. Tricia has since worked with a wide range of British and international schools and presented at numerous conferences. Tricia is also a former Associate Lecturer for English at Goldsmith’s University teacher training programme in London and Education Consultant for PowerTools, based in New York City. Tricia holds a BA (Hons) in English Literature and Journalism and a Master of Education.

Tricia spent Tuesday's professional development day sharing the latest and best research on the most effective learning strategies with staff, with a focus on the role of memory, metacognition, and mindset.

During the week, Tricia also visited lessons to gain a deeper understanding of how learning works in our context and to help us identify improvements that we can make in our teaching and learning provision. There were also multiple sessions where Tricia met with students to talk about effective learning and study strategies.

Tricia also hosted a Parent Connect Workshop on February 3 titled "What Every Parent Should Know about Learning," where she explored the science of learning and the most effective strategies children can use to maximise learning.

Tricia also offered tips to support revision at home and the development of the most effective habits.

We will continue to engage Tricia on our journey toward school improvement over the next few years. She shares our values of integrity, respect, and care. We know that her work with us is going to have a lasting impact on our school and enhance the learning experiences of our students. We look forward to the ongoing partnership and the work and learning that are to come.

Secondary Learning Showcase

Modern Languages - Year 7 new topics

We are excited to announce the introduction of two new topics for our French and Spanish classes - School Life and Family Life. These topics aim to help our students develop critical thinking and communication skills, while also providing a fun and engaging learning experience.

In these classes, students will learn how to describe their daily routines, talk about their school experiences, and express their opinions and thoughts on a range of topics related to school and family life. Our students will also have the opportunity to engage in a variety of interactive activities that will enhance their understanding of the languages and cultures they are studying.

We believe that it is important for parents to be involved in their child's education and would like to encourage you to book an appointment for our upcoming Parent's Evening on Thursday, February 9^th. During this evening, you will have the opportunity to discuss your child's progress with their teacher and learn more about the exciting things they have been learning in their modern language classes.

We hope that these new topics will help our students continue to grow and develop their language skills, and that you will join us for Parent's Evening to learn more about their achievements.
