As part of their CAS project, a core element of the IB Diploma programme, our Year 13 students taught our primary pupils about the importance of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (or Global Goals).
The UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a blueprint for achieving a better and more sustainable future for all. Their aims encompass areas such as education, health and climate action, alongside economic growth and building sustainable cities.
Having developed a strong passion for the Global Goals, a group of our Year 13 students took the opportunity to teach Year 4 and Year 5 pupils about the importance of these universal shared objectives.
Year 13 students Suhjin (Angela), Minseo (Heidy), Thu An, Ha Linh, Sang Hyo, and Seonju successfully coordinated a set of special lessons as part of their CAS project in April and May this year. The aim of the lessons was to both introduce younger students to the SDGs, and to inspire them to consider how they might contribute to this worldwide endeavor.
A Set of Unique Lessons
These lessons were an enlightening experience for the younger students who, by the end of the final session, had gained an understanding of the SDGs and developed an awareness of their own role in creating a society that champions sustainable growth.
This initiative was a great accomplishment for the Year 13 students - who fully achieved their aims of raising awareness and interest in the SDGs among younger students. In channeling their passion for the SDGs into meaningful action, their actions also reflected the aims of the Global Goals themselves.
Developing New Skills
This activity was a fantastic opportunity for the Year 13 students to acquire new skills and experiences - including time management, teamwork, and communication skills - all of which will aid them in their future development.
Ms Greenwood, the students’ CAS supervisor, was very impressed with their accomplishments. "This was a very ambitious project that was impressively managed and delivered. I loved that the students had to communicate with different members of staff who they didn’t necessarily know. They did this with politeness and confidence - and all the staff involved were happy with the organisation of the activity and the outcomes for the younger students. When I visited the sessions, it was really heartwarming for me to see the younger students fully engaged with the interesting activities, while the staff were playing only a supervisory role," said Ms Greenwood.
A Global Outlook
This project highlights the strong connection between BIS Hanoi students of all ages. It’s another example of how our students are truly "global citizens learning together" - a community who support each other and care for younger generations.
Furthermore, this endeavor also reflected the importance of the CAS project in the IB Diploma programme. The CAS project really pushes students to take on new challenges and work cooperatively to overcome obstacles. It is the gateway to experiential learning and is critical in assisting students to play their part in the development of a better world.
