Tips to help your child with Mathematics at home This weekend the news broke that students across Hanoi would once again be learning from home to help prevent and control a new COVID–19 wave. As a community, we have adapted seamlessly back to online learning and our students have continued to show great perseverance and a fabulous attitude towards their studies. As Maths Curriculum Leaders, we wanted to take this opportunity to share some tips and advice for helping your children with Mathematics at home.

This weekend the news broke that students across Hanoi would once again be learning from home to help prevent and control a new COVID–19 wave. As a community, we have adapted seamlessly back to online learning and our students have continued to show great perseverance and a fabulous attitude towards their studies. As Maths Curriculum Leaders, we wanted to take this opportunity to share some tips and advice for helping your children with Mathematics at home.  

Across Primary School, we’ve been hugely impressed with the progress that our students have been making and the number of them who are already meeting end-of-year, age-related expectations. BIS students are confident and competent in their mathematical fluency and procedural understanding and we are sure that this will continue even as our learning moves online. Working online gives parents a unique opportunity to gain insight into our Primary Maths Curriculum. We encourage the children to widen their knowledge through reasoning and problem solving and believe that working at home will allow students to discuss the methods that they are learning with you.  

As a school we are very fortunate to have access to some of the best online resources available within the British National Curriculum. Your child will have a login for Timestable Rockstars (https://ttrockstars.com/) and MyMaths (https://www.mymaths.co.uk/). Timetable Rockstars is an engaging online platform which allows children to develop their multiplication and division skills, whilst earning coins and challenging their friends. MyMaths allows students to practice the topics that they have been learning in class, guided by their teachers, who will set activities and tasks for them to complete. Additionally, you can find many free resources online to help your children further develop their mathematical learning and skills. White Rose (an online Maths Hub) provide a free ‘Problem of the Day’ (https://whiterosemaths.com/resources/classroom-resources/problems/) with varying levels of challenge, which you can download and complete with your children. 

Furthermore, you can assist your child in their learning by discussing the language and vocabulary of the topic with them. This will help to embed knowledge from their lessons and secure their understanding for the future. 

In Term 3 we have much to look forward to, including our upcoming House Maths Competition. During this week there will be a ‘Challenge of the Day’ for students to complete at home with prizes available for effort and attainment.
