As part of Nord Anglia's collaboration with Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), each year a competition is held to be able to spend a week at MIT, to meet the students and lecturers, and get hands on to solve the world's science problems. With only 65 places available globally across all Nord Anglia schools, the competition was tough.
The challenge this year was to create a video that outlined “If I was an innovator at MIT I would….”. 22 students from BIS Abu Dhabi entered from Year 9 and Year 11. The videos were insightful, well researched and balanced. Students used the prompt to discuss critical themes such as how they would use their role as an innovator to find new methods of energy generation to reduce the effects of global warming; how they could find ways to reduce traffic and pollution in major cities; how they could design new aircrafts, and even proposed ways in which being an innovator at MIT could solve the worlds refugee education crisis.
Leena’s discussion on the science behind ‘the art of thinking’ was truly inspiring. She delved into looking at how our mind creates thoughts, and therefore how our thoughts can take action, and how harnessing and growing our thinking skills, can lead to truly magnificent innovations – truly encapsulating MITs mantra of ‘Mens et Manus – the mind and hands’. Diana's submission investigated the need to integrate nature into daily life, and how biospheres can help achieve that. Diana’s submission was passionate and incredibly well researched. Her want to preserve natural beauty of the environment is truly inspirational.
Diana and Leena’s scored highly on all areas of the judging criteria and will now be part of the trip leaving in October 2024. This will be a fantastic opportunity to immerse themselves in a stimulating educational environment, engage with diverse and dynamic peers, and explore the cutting-edge facilities at MIT. It is also a chance to make lifelong friendships and create memories that they will cherish forever.
