Name and a little bit about you?:
I am Lucy, a Music Teacher here at BIS Abu Dhabi. My musical journey began when I started learning the Trumpet, aged 9, before joining a local Brass Band soon after. I soon realised that Music was a path I wished to follow, playing both Trumpet and Piano, and I went on to study a Bachelor of Arts degree, before continuing to achieve a Diploma in Music performance, an associate of the Trinity College London.
Having gained my PGCE, I started teaching in the UK, working as a Head of Music in the Central South of England and I am so excited to be continuing my journey with the team at BIS Abu Dhabi. Teaching has always been an important part of my life, with one of my favourite memories being teaching the trumpet to young students before attending university. I’m thrilled to be able to share my passion for music with the BIS Abu Dhabi community and be part of inspiring our students to be curious, to experiment, and to experience the joy music brings all across the world.
What do you love about Abu Dhabi?
I’m a creative person, and alongside music I enjoy art, cycling and travelling to new places, so I love taking time to explore the many wonders of the UAE!
What excites you the most about working at BIS Abu Dhabi?
The most exciting thing about working at BIS Abu Dhabi is not only the opportunity to help the students discover new ideas and experiences, but to experience these with them. One aspect which is really special to me is the musical link with the Juilliard school of music in New York. Having the opportunity to collaborate with teachers from across the globe, in order to give the students an insight into the Juilliard curriculum is truly unique.
I love the community feel within BIS Abu Dhabi. The students have a love of learning and the teachers are enthusiastic to help them discover new ideas and gain experiences.
What are you most looking forward to during your first week of the new academic year?
As a Music department, we are incredibly excited about getting to work on next year's Musical Production. Last year's production of Bugsy Malone was such a wonderful experience, witnessing the student’s talent and dedication and supporting them as they put on a fantastic show.
What areas of research/topics continue to capture your attention in your field?
Something I have always been interested in is the Psychology of music, music and the mind. The power of music is fascinating, how it can have such a deep impact, changing emotions within a matter of seconds. Music, a ‘universal language’, not only helps connect people from all over the world, but also plays a vital role in learning and language development.
What hobbies do you have?
My favourite hobby in Abu Dhabi is performing with a Big Band, giving me the opportunity to continue my love of performance and making lots of loud noise on the trumpet! Another love of mine is motor racing, and I’ve been lucky enough to experience driving a few supercars around my local F1 track in the UK, alongside attending the BTCC touring car championships.
