It was early in the competition when I popped in, but I was so impressed with amount of people we had from our community. It wasn’t only the students and immediate PE teachers, but family members, friends of the family, friends from school, and colleagues in other departments who might not even teach these students anymore. The feeling was great – that feeling of community of belonging. People welcoming each other and all there for a common cause – to support the BIS Abu Dhabi team. I was so impressed with the team’s early attempts in the Netball and Football that morning and although the scores weren’t quite going as they may have wanted, the opportunities were being created and it felt like it was only a matter of time before attempts would convert into points and hopefully victory. It was competitive but sporting. It felt like the day could be special. I continued my ride and my bike computer buzzed from time to time with little updates from the staff at the event – keeping me in the loop. I was excited and full of hope.
It turns out our joint efforts across the teams playing that weekend pulled off our first ever victory in BSME! The pride in me swelled and I can only image how the students and parents of the students felt. Not only did we feel proud, but members from the BSME community recognised how special this was for our students and our school. They commended our students for their efforts, sporting behaviours and achievements. The host stated, ‘They have conducted themselves with absolute dignity and respect throughout this tournament. … The group of young adults in this school are phenomenal. They are whole-heartedly deserved winners with some fantastic winners across the sports.’ It was great! Great to win and win in the right way.
Sport has continued to be a theme this week and I have loved seeing our students compete in their Houses throughout the week. It is lovely to have Sports Day back and I want to acknowledge and thank all of you as parents. Thank you for giving up your time to come and support and encourage your child to do their best. Again, there has been an air of positive competition. Students wanting to know their longest throw and jump and seeing if they can improve it. Competing for themselves as well as their House. Throughout this week I have seen students taking part, trying hard, encouraging each other, celebrating and supporting one another. I am so proud of the ethos our students exemplify day in day out. The BIS Abu Dhabi way starts from the youngest and continues through to the oldest. Well done one and all!
