The BIS Abu Dhabi Science department are excited to announce the delivery of our very own hydroponic, vertical garden. Hydroponics is the act of growing plants in water and liquid nutrients, without the use of soil. This method of agriculture is particularly useful for growing crops where space is limited, and the climate only allows for limited crop growth. It's estimated by 2050 that we will need to produce twice as much food, but with population growth, space is becoming limited. Hydroponics offer a sustainable and space saving solution; the crops can be harvested much quicker and larger quantities can be produced. Students will have the opportunity to learn about hydroponic growing systems and their benefits hands on. Currently, we are growing two types of lettuce, basil, and mint, which will be harvested in approximately 3 weeks. The produce will be used for in class investigations and the basis of many healthy meals.

At The British International School Abu Dhabi, we believe that education is not just about academic success—it’s about nurturing compassionate, responsible young people who understand the importance of giving back. This Ramadan, I have been truly moved by the way our students have embraced the spirit of the holy month, demonstrating kindness, generosity, and a genuine commitment to making a difference in the lives of others.
Inspired by the latest Nord Anglia INSIGHTS article exploring why the Early Years are the most important years of a child’s education, we know that a child’s most significant learning happens during this time - in ways that are not always immediately visible.
