Visual Arts Competition Well done to the BIS Abu Dhabi students who submitted pieces in the UNICEF Visual Arts Competition. Well done to the BIS Abu Dhabi students who submitted pieces in the UNICEF Visual Arts Competition.

This year’s challenge was for students to create a compelling work of art, in a medium of their choice, to illustrate their thoughts on Climate Change, Education, Vaccinations and/or Wellbeing.

A HUGE congratulations to the shortlisted students who were chosen from over 100 entries! BIS Abu Dhabi is delighted to announce that we had a shortlisted student in each age category.

Under 8 years: Valerlia with her piece - 'Recycle Inspector Bot’.
"I chose to make my artwork for the theme of ‘Climate and Environment’. My artwork shows a Mexican Sea Turtle robot who will be a recycle inspector and takes litter off the sand so the baby turtles can pass safely on their way to the sea. There are only seven species of Mexican Sea Turtles, and they are endangered because of litter."

8 - 11 years: Ruby with her piece - 'Hope your day brings you what it should…Happiness, health, and everything good.'
"This is a candle holder that I made with epoxy resin for the category ‘Well-being’. I chose to make it because the smell of candles can help people relax and I developed my resin skills by using gold leaf and dried flowers. I needed a little adult supervision to complete it."

11 - 14 years: Adithya with his piece - 'Earth Now and in The Future.'
"I have chosen the theme ‘Climate and Environment’ to portray what a perfect earth looks like and how it will look in the future if we don’t start protecting the planet immediately… It would be a barren land without water!"

14 - 18 years: Kyeong with her piece - 'There are more viruses in the world than there are stars in the universe.'
"And just one of those viruses that was discovered 3 years ago with this global pandemic. I think of these viruses as popcorns. As silly as it may sound, once you begin to see the odd but true resemblances, the metaphorical analogy makes sense.

In my first panel is a popcorn kernel. It’s fascinating to think about our obliviousness to the outbreak. At 185 degrees Celsius, the hull of the kernel can no longer bear the pressure of the steam: it pops. Yet at 184 degrees, even at 184.9 degrees, we can’t see a single difference from when the popcorn was at room temperature. Like how on 30th December 2019, we expected tomorrow to be the same. But when it pops, it’s a violent explosion of starch. The kernel spins in the air, its innards surging outwards. This is an accurate representation of the hardships of our ongoing battle against COVID-19."

Amazing to see the impressive, inspiring pieces and such promising talent from all of our students who took part, well done and congratulations on your hard work!
