Year 11 Art & Design - The art of creative thinking and problem solving
Year 11 Art & Design students recently completed their two-year programme of study in extraordinary circumstances. We live in a time of the unimaginable becoming imaginable, and it will be fascinating to see what artworks and practical solutions are created, by the artists, craft-makers and designers of this time.

We live in a time of the unimaginable becoming imaginable, and it will be fascinating to see what artworks and practical solutions are created, by the artists, craft-makers and designers of this time.

Along with developing their practical art making skills in a range of different media and processes, the course requires students to take inspiration from the world around them, from different cultures, contexts and times. Students look at the artmakers that have gone before and are challenged to imagine the world in which their art was created, what inspired the artist to make their artwork, and to what purpose. Artists not only create a record of a moment in time, they can challenge norms, through questioning and re-shaping thinking.

GCSE Art & Design students are at the beginning of this journey of discovery, and it is great to hear our current Art cohort speak with such passion and confidence about the essential transferrable skills they have developed along the way. Whether it was their imagination, empathy, independent motivation, time management, practical and teamworking skills, their ability to review, reflect and refine, or their aptitude for synthesizing multiple ideas and perspectives to draw inspiration to create something new and original. All students can recognise the ways in which they have grown throughout the course.

The world needs creative problem solvers; people who can learn from the past, then imagine and design an even better future. A well done to our Year 11 Art & Design students for all their hard work and achievements over the past two years.
