Our primary curriculum
At The British International School Bratislava, our primary students follow the English National Curriculum to earn of the the finest primary educations in Bratislava. Their learning is divided into the following stages:
Key Stage 1 (Years 1-2)
Our teachers focus on your child’s literacy and numeracy skills, building on the basics learnt in nursery and reception. Through a blend of themes and hands-on projects, they also introduce students to computing, geography, history, and design technology. Your child is encouraged to develop creative and problem-solving skills in STEAM subjects, too. Our Slovak nationals start Slovak language lessons in Year 2.
There’s also lots of fun to be had outside of the classroom, including at our Lego, puppet, sculpture, and active kids clubs.
Key Stage 2 (Years 3-6)
Key Stage 2 is split into two phases: lower (Years 3-4) and upper (Years 5-6).
Years 3 and 4
Our experienced teachers take an individualised approach to ensure your child is able to reach their full potential. They inspire children to learn so they develop a deeper understanding of maths, English, science, and computer technology. Interactive, practical projects encourage problem solving, while visits from outside experts inspire critical thinking. Our teachers make sure lessons include international themes, helping students to develop a global outlook.
Years 5 and 6
Alongside the core curriculum, your child will be encouraged to undertake projects which reflect learning in the real-world in a personally meaningful way. They’ll also find new ways to express themselves in the performing arts, at our extra-curricular clubs, on community outreach projects, and through our residential trips. As they approach secondary school, we help our students to become increasingly independent. It’s an exciting time, and we love to see our students rise to new challenges and take on responsibilities – both in the classroom and beyond.
English as an Additional Language (EAL)
Our expert team of EAL teachers run courses for students who need help with their English. They also organise extra lessons for those who want to learn at a faster pace. We’ve found immersing your child in an English-speaking community quickly helps them to become fluent speakers.
