Village Amongst Top 20 Best Private Schools in America according to Niche.com
Within Village’s mission statement, a key phrase stands out, embodying the summer of 2019: “committed to developing inquisitive lifelong learners.” Village aims to teach the value of learning so that when students leave at the end of the day or for summer break, the curiosity and drive to inquire remains.
One of many examples, Viking Audrey A. exemplifies an inquisitive learner. Audrey is currently a rising sophomore, but her maturity and ambition would have one believe otherwise.
An avid math and science student, this summer she was invited to be a delegate representing Texas at The Congress of Future Physicians and Medical Scientists in Boston. This honors-only program is for high schoolers across the country interested in the field of medicine as a future career. Audrey speaks about her passion for the field, explaining “I am very interested in the STEM-based field of medicine because of the opportunity to help people from all walks of life solve problems everyday.”
Even before her trip to Boston, the sophomore was already putting on scrubs at the National Youth Leadership Forum at Rice University. She gained hands-on clinical experience at Houston Methodist Research Hospital and earned college credit through George Mason University. But scrubs weren’t the only uniform she donned this summer: a valuable outside hitter for the Varsity Volleyball team, Aurey also attended the Tufts University Skills Camp, training with the Tufts University Volleyball coaches and players.
Audrey reflects on what has been most memorable about her whirlwind of experiences this summer, “I learned about cutting-edge advances in medicine and witnessed a live partial knee replacement surgery!”
As the beginning of a new school year approaches, we are eager to welcome back our inquisitive learners - many of whom have developed a new passion or skill, and others who have ignited their fire to learn even more.
Every school is home to exceptional individuals dedicated to making a positive impact on their community. Whether it's through class initiatives, service projects, or independent efforts, students are constantly striving to improve the world around them.
At The Village School, these initiatives shine brightly as students embrace opportunities to lead with empathy and purpose. One such example is a project started by Milan Drummond, a 12th grader with a passion for justice and community well-being. Through her initiative, Harmony Highways, Milan is working to improve relations between the public and law enforcement, reflecting both her desire to make a difference and her career aspirations.
During the summer time, vacations, pools, and fun are certainly on children’s minds. However, it’s also important to incorporate learning into their day. Summer learning loss, also known as the "summer slide," refers to the decline in academic and social skills that can occur when children are not engaged in educational activities during the summer months. Dana Sheridan, LPC, Lower School Counselor at The Village School, sheds light on this issue and offers practical solutions for parents to keep their children's minds active during the long summer break.
