As the Grade 12 students at Northbridge International School Cambodia approach their mock exams their stress levels and anxiety will increase. Whatever the root causes of the stress it can have a big impact on the well being and mental health of the students.
Consequently, I would like to go through a few points that will help to control exam stress and ensure that your mind is healthy and ready.
Your mind needs rejuvenating as much as your body and getting a good sleep is vital. Students should be getting at least 8 hours of sleep a night to ensure your brain is functioning at its best. The worst preparation for an exam would be staying up all night revising.
All too often students feel stressed about an exam because they have not fully prepared for it. Reviewing work and revising is not something that can happen over night and you need to spend time balancing your work. Make a habit of revising a subject regularly with your normal work load, in the end it all adds up to stress free revision.
It is all too easy to feel lost when reviewing two years of learning. Sometimes you will find gaps in your notes or have topics completely missing. The easiest, and fastest, way to get back on track is by speaking with your teacher. They will be able to quickly help you and your revision will flow smoothly again.
Your diet affects your energy levels and ultimately your mood. If you are slow and unproductive whilst revising you are going to feel disappointed and stressed. Healthy foods and fruit are great snacks to keep energy levels up whilst revising.
No-one is perfect and your exam scores will not be either. You don’t need 100% to get good grades and you should not put that pressure on yourself.
In the end understanding yourself and what causes you stress are the first steps in taking action to controlling it. Often when you read these steps they all seem very obvious, the challenge is to make a stand, do something different and ultimately feel better because of it.
