Turning passion into purpose: the story of Taara Projects

Shanthi Ramakrishna’s journey with Taara Projects began as a high school initiative but soon blossomed into a social enterprise dedicated to empowering craftspeople and promoting sustainable fashion.

A graduate of Windermere Preparatory School, her inspiration struck on a flight to Bangalore where she sketched a pair of pants, had them made by a local tailor, and sold them back home in Orlando, donating the proceeds to NGOs. What started as a small project evolved into a lifelong commitment.

During her freshman year of college in 2020, Shanthi elevated the project with a vision to explore how businesses could address societal challenges more effectively than traditional government action.

Its first major partnership was with Zy-lk, a sustainable fashion brand in Chennai, India. Together, they created the Taara Pant, which launched on Earth Day 2021 and sold out quickly. Since then, Taara Projects has expanded its product line to include button-down shirts and tote bags, partnering with ethical manufacturers in the US and India. Shanthi and her team are proving that businesses can be both profitable and socially responsible, making a positive impact on the world.
