Spaces that inspire learning: why incredible classroom design matters

Inspire Learning

At Nord Anglia Education, we believe a well-designed classroom can transform learning experiences, fostering joy and curiosity in students. To ensure our schools ignite our students’ imaginations we aim for our classrooms to:

1. Focus on the needs of the child

Every child is unique, and our classrooms reflect that. We design spaces that cater to different learning styles and physical needs, ensuring each student feels supported and inspired. From age-appropriate furniture to areas for independent study and group projects, our spaces nurture every child’s potential, promoting independence and hands-on learning.

2. Empower choice

Great classrooms offer amazing flexibility for students and teachers. Gone are the days of rigid, desk-based setups. We create environments where students can choose how they learn best whether through collaborative hubs or quiet corners. This autonomy fosters engagement and helps young minds take charge of their learning journey.

3. Boost creativity

Creativity thrives in environments that stimulate the senses and encourage exploration. Our classrooms feature a variety of textures, colours, and interactive elements that invite students to think outside the box. We believe that creativity is not just an art class activity but a core part of all learning experiences.

4. Integrate blended learning

Our classrooms are equipped with the latest technology to support both in-person and virtual learning when it’s needed. With flexible layouts, and advanced digital tools, we ensure that students can seamlessly transition between different learning modes and collaborate with their peers in Nord Anglia’s other schools around the world.

5. Deliver inclusive and accessible environments

Inclusion is at the heart of our design philosophy. We create spaces that are accessible to all students, considering physical accessibility, acoustics, and lighting. Our designs ensure that every student, regardless of their needs, feels welcome and supported in a learning environment that values diversity and promotes equality.

6. Support wellbeing

A classroom should be a sanctuary for students and teachers alike. From comfortable seating and good air quality to spaces for mindfulness and relaxation, our designs prioritise the health and happiness of our school community.

7. Celebrate their local identity

While our schools are globally connected, they also celebrate their local culture and identity. We incorporate regional architectural styles, local materials, and cultural elements into our classroom designs. This balance ensures that each school and all its learning environments feels rooted in their communities while part of the larger Nord Anglia family.

8. Embrace sustainable design

Sustainability is a key driver in our designs. We aim to minimise environmental impact through energy-efficient buildings, use of sustainable materials, and designs that educate students about sustainability. Our goal is to create spaces that are not only good for our students but also for the planet.

9. Prioritise safety

Safety is paramount in our classroom design. We incorporate secure access points, clear visibility, and emergency preparedness. Features like rounded furniture edges and non-slip flooring too. Our designs meet or exceed safety standards, providing a worry-free space for students and teachers.

Michael Alete, Head of Campus Design, said: “At Nord Anglia Education, we believe classrooms should be more than just spaces students fill. Instead, they’re places of inspiration, designed to be flexible, inclusive, and inspirational. And our design philosophy ensures each one supports educational excellence, wellbeing, and a love for learning”.
