NAIS Announces Artist-in-Residence project with Cornelia Erdmann
NAIS Hong Kong is pleased to announce its first ever Artist-in-Residence programme with Cornelia Erdmann collaborating with the PTA (special thanks to PTA member Mrs Jessica Bruser and specialist Art teacher Mrs Sarah-Jane Pate for helping to make this happen). Ms. Erdmann is an award-winning artist specialising in public art, commissions and multi-media installations and we very much look forward to her working with our students, and for them to be a part of this fantastic project.

Ms. Erdmann is an award-winning artist specialising in public art, commissions and multi-media installations and we very much look forward to her working with our students, and for them to be a part of this fantastic project.
Ms. Erdmann joined our Assembly on 24 March to introduce herself to our students and shared some background to this inspirational project. The student led project will be a three-story art installation of large steel panels, with colourful acrylic pieces designed and made by each student in the school.
As a part of our collaboration with Ms. Erdmann, all students will be introduced to concepts of public art and multi-media installation as she shares her expertise in these fields. All students will have the opportunity to participate in two classes with her over the course of five weeks with every class working on a whole school collaborative piece of Art. Also, they will be hands-on involved to create a mural installation for their school’s courtyard – a community project.
During the first Art lesson, students will create a silhouette design inspired by their favourite specialist subject focusing on the visual elements, shape, line and pattern. For example, they may choose to draw an image of their favourite sporting activity, a musical instrument or a character from a play. With the support of Ms. Erdmann, the designs will then be transferred into a digital format and sent to a specialist company for production in acrylic glass. The second Art lesson will enable pupils to experiment with and contribute to the final composition of the art installation where they will learn skills about layout, balance and layering in order to create an aesthetically pleasing outcome that will build up to create the final mural installation.
The final fabricated pieces of Artwork will then be permanently and professionally mounted against the building within the Panda Playground so that it can be admired from all angles around the school. We hope to have a big launch event where parents and every student can join us for the grand unveiling in June, showcasing the wonderful work of your children, letting them take pride in what they have helped produce and all of us sharing in the joy of creativity.
Parents will also have the chance to meet Ms. Erdmann on Wednesday, 5th April, 6:30-8pm where she will share more about the project over some cheese and wine. There will also be the opportunity to learn more about how you, our parents, can support, and to get more in-depth understanding about what your children will be doing and how amazing the final project will be. She will also talk about her work so this is a great opportunity to meet a Hong Kong based artist.
Both the school and PTA are contributing towards this great project to make it happen, however we still need the support of parents as well. As such, we hope you understand that there will be a charge of HK$250 per child. This additional money will help us to create and install a very special, unique piece of art that will be enjoyed for many years to come. Please note that all money should be given to the Admissions Office.
Sponsorship opportunities are also available for those families (or group of friends) wishing to make a greater contribution. Families donating larger amounts would see their generosity acknowledged by having a name plaque included as part of the installation. Please contact Jane Archibald for more details.
This project is a great opportunity to be part of something very special at our school, with the art installation being a long term fixture. Every child will be able to see their art work displayed and know the contribution they have made. We hope you’re as excited as we are about this collaboration. In the coming months, the school will announce more details about the project as pupils take part in a competition to name the installation and use their house colours as a part of the installation’s concept so stay tuned.
