EXTENDED ESSAY

One of the most interesting and challenging components of the IB Diploma Programme is to undertake independent research into a topic of the student's special interest and then to write an extended essay of up to 4,000 words on it. The Extended Essay (EE) is required, externally assessed and independent research, presented in formal academic writing.

THE EXTENDED ESSAY's BENEFITS 

The Extended Essay encourages high-level research and writing skills, intellectual discovery, and creativity. This leads to a major piece of formally presented, structured writing of up to 4,000 words, through which, students communicate the ideas and findings in a reasoned, coherent manner.

We guide our IB students at NAIS Hong Kong through a prescribed Extended Essay process of research and writing, following the guidance of an assigned supervisor. All undertake three mandatory reflection sessions with their supervisor, including a short concluding interview (or viva voce), following the completion of the Extended Essay.

TOPICS AND AIMS

Students can choose essay topics from a list of approved subjects – normally from one of the student’s six chosen subjects for the IB Diploma or from the World Studies option. World Studies gives students the opportunity to carry out an in-depth interdisciplinary study of an issue of contemporary global significance, using two IB disciplines.

The Extended Essay's aims include: 


  • engaging in independent research with intellectual initiative and rigour
  • developing research, thinking, self-management, and communication skills
  • reflecting on what has been learned throughout the research and writing process.

Our students will start their preparations for the Extended Essay in the autumn term of Year 12, and they'll complete the research or data collection ideally before the end of the summer term. This helps them write and submit the final essay at the start of the winter term in Year 13. The IB recommends that a student devotes a total of about 40 hours of private study and writing time to the essay.

This is excellent preparation for pursuing a thesis at university, as our students become experienced in the research and academic writing skills that lead to success.
