At the helm of our primary school is Ms. Joy Bromfield, a passionate educator and leader committed to shaping an environment where both students and staff can thrive. With a clear focus on enhancing the school’s community engagement, strengthening the curriculum, and fostering an inclusive atmosphere, Ms. Bromfield's leadership promises to usher in an exciting chapter for the school.
Strengthening Community Connections: Parent and Student Engagement
A central focus for Ms. Bromfield is strengthening the relationship between the school and its families. As schools worldwide have felt the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the challenge of reconnecting with parents has been evident. Ms. Bromfield is keen on revitalising the Parent Council, an initiative that had slowed down during the pandemic, but recent school events have given her hope. “We are starting to see a core group of parents who are passionate about supporting the school,” she shares. This newfound engagement is a steppingstone toward re-establishing a strong partnership between parents and school leadership.
Equally important is Ms. Bromfield’s commitment to amplifying the student voice. She envisions a school where students, from the youngest in EYFS to Year 6, are not only heard but empowered to lead initiatives. “Understanding how students perceive their school and involving them in decision-making is essential. It allows us to celebrate their successes and address any areas that need improvement from their perspective,” she explains.
A Dual Focus on Curriculum Development: English and Arabic
As part of her commitment to academic excellence, Ms. Bromfield is focusing on refining the school’s English curriculum. Recognising that strong proficiency in English is vital for students’ success as they transition into secondary education, she has outlined a plan to enhance phonics, reading, and writing skills. “We want to ensure that by the time our students leave the primary school, they are confident and proficient in English,”.
Ms. Bromfield also places high importance on the Arabic curriculum, working closely with the Head of Arabic to meet the unique needs of the predominantly Arabic-speaking community. "The quality of our Arabic curriculum should match the excellence of our British curriculum. It’s vital for ensuring that our students are connected to their cultural roots while excelling in their academic journey," she emphasises.
A key focus is encouraging parental involvement and ensuring that it aligns with the school’s expectations and policies. Ms. Bromfield, who is the Designated Safeguarding Lead and oversees safeguarding at NAISAK stresses the importance of parents supporting the school’s behaviour policies and expectations, as a lack of alignment can undermine the school’s authority and disrupt the learning environment for all children. She calls for open communication and mutual respect between parents and the school. “It’s essential that parents’ partner with us to create a positive atmosphere that supports all children’s’ growth,” she emphasises.
Personal Insights: A Leader with Passion and Purpose
Beyond her leadership role, Ms. Bromfield is a person of diverse interests and passions. Born and educated in London, England, she is deeply influenced by the strong moral and traditional beliefs instilled by her parents. While British, she proudly draws inspiration from her Jamaican heritage, particularly through the vibrant food and rich Caribbean culture that continue to shape her identity.
“Jamaican cuisine is an essential part of my identity. I love sharing dishes like Jamaican beef patties and curry goat with friends and family,” she reveals.
Ms. Bromfield has also developed a strong appreciation for the culinary diversity in Qatar, particularly enjoying dishes like Luqaimat and Machboos. Cooking remains a personal joy, and she enjoys experimenting with different flavors in the kitchen.
In terms of her educational background, Ms. Bromfield is a lifelong learner. With a BA Honours in Education, a Master’s in Education, National Professional Qualification in Senior Leadership (NPQSL) and a National Professional Qualification in Headship (NPQH) under her belt, she is eager to pursue further professional growth. “I’m excited to join the BSO Schools inspectors team as a school inspector, to inspect British schools overseas and look forward to learning from best practises around the world,” she shares.
Leadership Philosophy: Student-Centered and Community-Driven
Ms. Bromfield’s leadership philosophy revolves around building effective relationships and leading with emotional intelligence. Ensuring the well-being of the students, fostering strong connections within the staff, and creating a collaborative environment is key. “Building relationships with children, parents and staff, is the most important part of my job. I want them to feel safe, supported, and heard,” she says. Her approach is one of genuine care, striving to create an environment where everyone—children, staff, and parents—feels like a valued member of the school community.
To build these connections, Ms. Bromfield is working to bring the parents and staff closer together through activities, like coffee mornings, parent workshops, parent council meetings and class assemblies, to promote collaboration and creativity. She believes that when staff and parents are well-connected, they can provide even better support to students.
Looking Forward: A Vision for Success
Joy's vision for the future of the primary school is clear, and it is one filled with growth, inclusivity, academic excellence and community spirit. Whether it’s enhancing the curriculum, improving student well-being, or strengthening ties with parents, her leadership is a testament to her commitment to excellence. With a clear sense of purpose and a passion for both her professional and personal growth, Ms. Bromfield is poised to lead the Primary school into a bright and successful future.
In her own words, “I am truly excited about what the future holds for our school. It’s a place of opportunity, and I can’t wait to see all of our children grow, thrive, and succeed.”
