Family Sports Day in the Early Years

Our Family Sports day was so important to our pupils as they really enjoyed joining in with the activities and spending time with their families. It also gave parents a chance to be great role models for their children. At BVIS we want to encourage our students to engage in sports and a healthy lifestyle but at the same time spend quality time with their parents.

The activities were challenging and rewarding and we tried to put an emphasis on the importance of having fun and trying our best rather than the competitiveness and desire to come first at everything. All the children were encouraged to access the activities at a level that they were comfortable with whilst developing a love for sport or physical activity that will stay with them long after their time at school.

Research on sports day has proved that it enhances mental and physical development, social skills and their academic performance. We also believe that by playing sports children go on to not only develop their developed physical skills but, make new friends, learn to be a team member, improve their self-esteem and have fun. In addition, participating in sports can be a helpful way of reducing stress and increasing feelings of physical and mental well-being.

This Family Sports day focused on developing three of our Prime Areas of learning taken from our Early Years curriculum ‘Development Matters’. These included; Physical Development, Personal, Social and Emotional Development and Communication and Language.
