My background is in Science, having graduated from the University of Liverpool with a bachelors in biochemistry, and a diploma in advanced science. I moved to South East Asia in 2013 and after a year of teaching in Thailand I settled in Myanmar and have been living and working here ever since. After moving to Myanmar I completed my PGCE and am currently pursuing a masters in educational leadership and management.
The Myanmar people are the main reason that I have stayed in this beautiful country for so long. The students that I have worked with over the last ten years have been the most respectful and hardworking young adults that I have had the pleasure of working with, and their interest and motivation fuels my passion for teaching science, as well as keeping me on my toes in the classroom!
As a science teacher I am a strong promoter of enquiry based learning - something that is inherent in science as a subject. This means lots of problem solving activities in the form of practical experiments which tailors to both individual and group strengths.
I also encourage students to ask questions in my classroom, even if it may not be directly related to the topic at hand. If a student shows interest in something, we should as educators nurture that interest. Additionally, questioning is a huge part of scientific thinking, which precedes all other scientific processes. Teaching science is a genuine passion for me, and helping students work through difficult topics and ultimately gaining confidence in something that they once thought impossible is one of the most satisfying parts of my job as an educator.
Last year marked an exciting chapter for the British School Yangon as we launched our first MIT challenges, designed to push the boundaries of learning by encouraging students to dive deep into hands-on, collaborative problem-solving. From Early Years to Year 10, students engaged in challenges that stimulated their curiosity, sharpened their critical thinking, and connected classroom knowledge to real-world applications. What started as an initiative has now become a defining feature of our curriculum.
We are excited to share a significant milestone in our journey: The British School Yangon (BSY) has officially received accreditation from the Council of British International Schools (COBIS). This prestigious recognition highlights our unwavering commitment to delivering high-quality education that aligns with British standards.
