Mr. Stephen Collyer, originally from Great Britain, began his teaching career in 1996 after completing his degree at the University of Derby. For two decades, he taught at a primary school in Belper, Derbyshire, taking on various roles including senior management, curricular leadership, and SENCO. Seeking new experiences, he moved to international teaching, with positions in the UAE, Warsaw, and now Amman, Jordan. He will soon join BSY in Yangon as a Year 4 teacher.
Stephen believes in making children active participants in their learning, focusing on experience, investigation, and inspiration. His teaching is characterized by creativity, strong teacher-student relationships, and ensuring accessibility for all abilities. He brings fun and humor into the classroom, occasionally even incorporating magic.
Outside of teaching, Mr. Collyer enjoys cycling, photography, reading historical literature, and exploring new places. He looks forward to immersing himself in Myanmar's culture, language, and cuisine, and is eager to become part of the BSY community.
Stephen's inspiration for teaching began with volunteering for a Scout Group, leading to a teaching taster day that set his career in motion. Among his favorite experiences was co-leading a Space Camp in Huntsville, Alabama, providing students with an unforgettable adventure. He also enjoys using Top Trumps to encourage reading and other skills, even participating in the World Top Trumps Championships. He once participated in the World Toe Wrestling Championships in Derbyshire and came second!
He is excited to explore BSY, meet his new students, and contribute to the school community both professionally and socially.
Last year marked an exciting chapter for the British School Yangon as we launched our first MIT challenges, designed to push the boundaries of learning by encouraging students to dive deep into hands-on, collaborative problem-solving. From Early Years to Year 10, students engaged in challenges that stimulated their curiosity, sharpened their critical thinking, and connected classroom knowledge to real-world applications. What started as an initiative has now become a defining feature of our curriculum.
We are excited to share a significant milestone in our journey: The British School Yangon (BSY) has officially received accreditation from the Council of British International Schools (COBIS). This prestigious recognition highlights our unwavering commitment to delivering high-quality education that aligns with British standards.
