Year 12 BISS Talks Event

Year 12 BISS Talks Event - Year 12 BISS Talks Event

On 30 October, Year 12 English A students took part in their own BISS Talks event, delivering a range of engaging presentations. Standing in front of an audience can be a daunting task, but the speakers rose to the occasion, sharing their ideas with confidence and passion.

The event highlighted the diverse interests and talents within the group, with each talk offering a unique perspective. Melis delivered a thoughtful reflection on what makes a book a classic, exploring the qualities that allow literature to endure through time. Sophia discussed the power of cultural exchange, using personal anecdotes to connect with the audience and promote the benefits of embracing new experiences. Meanwhile, Braxton and Yeongkeon both focused on the digital age, with Braxton exploring how AI is changing the world and Yeongkeon emphasising the importance of managing your digital footprint.

It was clear that the judges (IBDP experts Dr Cattell and Mr Olya) faced a tough decision in selecting the winners, as all speakers delivered such strong and well-prepared talks. Ultimately, Harrison secured third place with his compelling discussion of justice and rehabilitation, while Moira claimed second place with a personal and heartfelt talk debunking the stereotypes of being an introvert.

However, it was Hugh who took first place with his simultaneously entertaining and insightful talk about swearing. Speaking with precision and clarity, he explored profanity from linguistic, psychological and social perspectives, demonstrating how language shapes our experiences and influences the way we communicate.

Overall, it was impressive to see the Year 12 students taking a leading role in their learning and presenting their ideas with enthusiasm. We look forward to hearing from more students at future events.
