French students retrace footsteps of Tintin

French students retrace footsteps of Tintin - French students retrace footsteps of Tintin

On Wednesday, our Year 9 French students embarked on an adventure around Shanghai’s Former French Concession, retracing the footsteps of the famous Belgian cartoon journalist, Tintin.

Year 9 students have been studying Hergé’s famous comic book ‘Le Lotus Bleu’, which is set in Shanghai in the 1930s. Tintin travels around Shanghai throughout the story, visiting many different landmarks along the way. As our students retraced his footsteps, they noticed how these landmarks have changed and developed over the last century – some of them hardly recognisable now!

Working in groups led by our wonderful Year 12 French B students (and wearing bespoke Tintin hats!), our students raced across the city to find the landmarks, winning a sticker from the comic book as they reached each one. At each landmark, they had to unravel a series of French clues or questions about that place – which Year 9 managed to solve in record speed!

The race was tense, with teams overtaking each other at each landmark, all eager to win! In addition to the main race, they also had to make sure they snapped cool photos of Tintin’s sidekick, Milou, who joined us for the adventure. We can’t wait to see all the photos of Milou on his big day out in Shanghai!

After l’équipe rouge were crowned the winners of the race, we headed to La Crêperie, where our students enjoyed traditional French galettes and an array of delicious French desserts – including Crème Brulée, crêpes and Far Breton. Our students debriefed about the race whilst tucking into the tasty dishes!

Once we arrived back in school, we finished our French day of fun with some games of pétanque to unwind – what a fantastique day! We are so proud of our Year 9 and Year 12 French learners, who were incredible ambassadors for the school and embraced a day of speaking, reading and learning about all things French!
