Throughout last week, approximately 80 amazing, confident students took to the Chatterbox ‘stage’ to perform in the termly BISS Unplugged Soloist Recitals. We had a diverse range of musical styles played by performers ranging from first timers right through to our experienced more advanced students.
A very special part of the event was our ‘Fantastic Firsts Day’ that specifically celebrated our young first-time performers. It is always a special moment to witness a child performing in public for the first time and it was lovely to see and hear students as young as Reception age doing this with confidence and with a smile.
On the last day of the performance, we invited some of the elderly residents from Evergreen Homeland to be a part of the audience. It was lovely to be able to give them the gift of music and to see the smiles on faces all around.
As an audience, we were primed to listen with focus to all this music, and to respond with our whole being as we faced the beautiful reality that music deeply heard will always impact the trio of head, heart and body.
Hans Christian Andersen is attributed with the line “When words fail, music speaks” and this in many ways encapsulates why the arts are so valuable to the human experience. Of course, it also brings us to the conundrum that “writing about music is like dancing about architecture”, not that it can’t or shouldn’t be done, but that Music and the arts have an essence that cannot be captured with words alone. Suffice to say, if you missed being at the recitals last week do come next time and let our wonderful students give you the inexpressible gift of music!
