BISS Lions Sports Update

From Monday 9 October, the BISS Puxi PE team hosted Sports Days for students from Year 3 to Year 6. This was an opportunity for all students and teachers to come together and work as a House to compete for the Sports Day House Trophy.

The mission of the PE Department is to create an environment that fosters a life-long love of sports through participation and providing opportunities to develop, succeed and excel. Sports Days are the culmination of this ethos. The PE Team have designed all Sports Days to link from Pre-Nursery to Year 13. Unfortunately, due to weather conditions the Secondary Sports Day has been postponed to Term 3.

In a change from previous years, the PE team decided to run a Years 3-4 Sports Day and a Years 5-6 Sports Day as two separate events to allow the students to have a more enjoyable and focused experience. The students practised each event in the lead up to Sports Day in their PE lessons. They discovered the rules of each event and the technique needed to compete and excel. Sports Days for Years 3-6 students are an opportunity for both mass participation and a chance for healthy competition.

The Years 3-4 Sports Day was held on Monday 9 October and the Years 5-6 Sports Day was held on Wednesday 11 October.

In Year 4-Year 6, throughout the day, the students competed as a team to score points in high jump, standing long jump, standing triple jump, javelin, discus, shot put, sprinting and long-distance running. Each throw, jump or run gave students the opportunity to score between one and three points for their House. They had fifteen minutes on each activity to score as many points as possible. One boy and one girl from each House with the fastest time, furthest throw and longest jump received a medal. The students also participated in many fun traditional Sports Day activities such as the tug of war, sack races and the old favourite, the egg and spoon race. Year 3 students followed a similar programme to the Years 4-6 students with modified activities such as discus was substituted for coil toss, shot put was substituted for chest push to allow students to access the gross motor skills in a successful scenario. The event was supported by the Secondary Sports Leaders who assisted the PE Department to lead the warm up, run events and motivate the students.

Congratulations to all students who won medals on the day. We know that we have many budding Marlon Devonishs in our school. Students who enjoy athletics are invited to sign up our inspiring Athletics ECA programme in Term 2.

Last week, the BISS teams found success, winning the Division I Women’s Volleyball Plate Tournament. On Saturday 4 November, the 2023 ACAMIS Red Division Men’s Volleyball semi-final took place at the Chinese International School, Hong Kong, at which the BISS Lions finished fourth in the men’s and sixth in the women’s categories.

The teams made up of a promising group of young talents, who strive to achieve success inside and outside the volleyball court lines, defended our colours with great passion and in a dignified manner. The 2024 Volleyball Seniors express their gratitude and thanks to the Year 10 and 11 athletes for taking part and making the adventure possible. They are moving on to greener pastures safe in the knowledge that the BISS Lions Volleyball programme is poised to become a force to be reckoned with.
