Congratulations to our Village Middle School ExploraVision Teams for winning Regionals! Out of over 5000 teams participating in Toshiba ExploraVision, only 24 win regionals. Our 6th grade and 7th grade teams won regionals in their respective categories.
The 6th Grade Team, consisting of coaches Jodie Brivic, Anna Wolfe, and students Serina, Sarah, Melania, and Manya, developed FAST, a scanner that detects food allergies. The team believes that food allergies "should be approached in a positive, proactive way.” Avoiding food allergies is hard in a "new world of fast food and eating out," where "few [ideas] have proven effective." FAST, the Food Allergy Scanning Tool, "scans food and informs the user if an allergen is present. FAST is extremely user friendly, and a simple device that has the potential to save millions of lives."
The 7th Grade team, consisting of coach Colleen Tautfest and students Rend and Melody developed The Brancer Gum, a gum that can detect cancer through the user's saliva. The invention reacts to your saliva and can detect if the user has breast cancer - if the gum turns pink, cancer may be present. If the color does not change, the user is cancer free."
The two teams are now expanding their projects by creating prototypes and working on developing websites. Go Vikings!
