This year, Nord Anglia Education offered the opportunity for talented musicians and singers from its family of schools to be part of its inaugural Global Orchestra.
Back in March, auditions were open for more than 23,000 students across 31 Nord Anglia schools in 13 countries. Those students were auditioning for the chance to be part of the Global Orchestra summer school and play in New York from June 24-July 1, 2015.
Each school held its own auditions, and the top performers were then invited to share a recorded audition with a global judging panel. The judges selected up to three young musicians and singers from each school to create a truly international collective. The judging panel eventually decided on 80 talented individuals comprising of 46 instrumentalists and 34 singers. Many congratulations to everyone who auditioned; the judges saw an exceptional number of talented individuals and had to make some very tough decisions.
The students attending from British International School of Chicago are Anica Aguilera, Year 8, playing the bass guitar; Katie Baffa, Year 6, singing in the choir; and Sidharth Shukla, Year 7, playing the violin. In addition, Simon Cohen, Year 11, wrote an original composition that the Global Orchestra will perform.
During the trip, students will participate in inspiring workshops and practice sessions guided by experts. The Juilliard School has designed an exciting program to give students a taste of the three disciplines taught by the school: music, dance and drama.
Performing arts are an integral part of Nord Anglia schools and the British International School of Chicago, helping to spark curiosity and develop our students’ communication and collaboration skills. The Global Orchestra has allowed young musicians from around the world to learn from each other, to perform together and to build their creativity and confidence as performers and global citizens. As well as exposing students to a wide range of musical experiences, the Global Orchestra will cultivate open-mindedness as students embrace the culture of the city and build friendships with peers from around the world.
