Attend Our Open House
On October 16 the Year 8 Spanish students visited the neighborhood of Pilsen. It was a fantastic opportunity for us to learn about Hispanic culture within the city. During our trip we were able to see some of the incredible artwork and murals that can be found on display throughout the neighborhood. We also visited the Museum of Mexican Art to see the work of local and influential Mexican artists.
The highlight of our trip to the museum was without a doubt the Day of Dead exhibition. It included some thought provoking pieces and some of the beautiful brightly-colored "ofrendas," including an "ofrenda" to the author Gabriel Garcia Marquez, designed from pages of his books.
Students then had the opportunity to purchase traditional Day of the Dead sugar skulls at the Museum’s festival for folk art. The museum staff were very impressed that the Year 8s were able to complete their transactions in Spanish. Finally, a trip to Pilsen wouldn’t be complete without a stop for Mexican hot chocolate!
