What can you do to prepare for college?
Thinking about college can be both exciting and nerve-wracking at the same time, which is why it’s important to start preparing for college early on in your high school career. When you first begin high school, going to college can seem like a lifetime away - but you’re only three short years away from applying to college!
Start your journey by talking to your family, friends, teachers, coaches and counselors about your goals for the future. What are your dreams and hopes? What aspirations do you have, and what are your uncertainties about the future? Ask people about their own college experience, and be open to listening to their advice.
Part of preparing early means taking your high school education seriously; discover your learning style and develop your talents and passions. Take the most challenging courses available to you in order to grow intellectually. A solid scholastic performance in high school demonstrates to university admissions that you are ready for the academic challenges at college, and that you will be a strong addition to their student body.
Beyond achieving top grades, colleges want to see a student who is actively involved in their school community and beyond. Getting involved in extracurricular activities, sports or volunteer opportunities that you truly enjoy and commit to shows college admissions that you are the kind of student who will embrace the college experience and be an asset on their campus. Remember, when it comes to extracurriculars, it's quality over quantity!
It’s important to start planning now - what kinds of things do you need to do between now and when it’s time to submit your college applications that will make you a top applicant?
