We are excited to announce that from September 2016 our Boston private school students will benefit from an enhanced performing arts curriculum.
The British International School of Boston will become one of the first schools in the world to benefit from an innovative new collaboration between Nord Anglia Education and The Juilliard School in New York. Our students will follow an embedded performing arts curriculum developed by specialists from Juilliard, along with continued support from, and engagement with, Juilliard alumni and affiliated artists.
The collaboration is designed to enhance our performing arts offering through its innovative structure, design and approach. The new embedded arts curriculum, which focuses first on music, was developed by curriculum and music experts at both Juilliard and Nord Anglia Education.
"To gain the collaboration of a prestigious institution like The Juilliard School opens up a whole new and exciting world of opportunities for our students," said Headmaster Paul Wiseman. "Collaboration with The Juilliard School will not only create new, high quality opportunities for our students, but will generate a significant and expansive impact on raising aspirations and achievement throughout our entire school."
The music curriculum is designed for all students, not just those who are serious about learning an instrument or musical performance. It is based around a repertoire of 12 core works covering a wide range of cultures, genres and historical periods, each of which has been carefully chosen by Juilliard to open the door to categories of music and fundamentals essential for all young people to know and experience.
Ultimately, the curriculum aims to nurture cultural literacy and support your child in developing key skills, such as discipline, creativity and confidence that will enable them to succeed anywhere in the world once they’ve left school.
Teachers across our Boston private school said they are confident the collaboration will be an important addition to the school’s rigorous academic program, and will improve student learning across all subject areas.
Head of Music David Rees said the music program will provide greater depth to Boston students’ music learning, and will inspire students to delve deeper into other subjects, as well.
“The styles of music we explore will have a positive knock on impact in other subjects as we will be looking at historical moments from years gone by, combined with studying different cultures and changing movements across the performing arts," he said.
Head of Science Tom Murphy said, “Since Newland's Law of Octaves in 1864, the art of music has been inextricably linked to the pursuit of scientific knowledge. The fundamental harmonies achieved by the combination of chords echo the patterns and relationships found in the Periodic Table, with mathematics being the glue that binds the disciplines together. Far from being alternatives to each other, science and music are the ultimate companions.”
Joseph W. Polisi, President at the Juilliard School, said, "In collaborating with Nord Anglia, we have a unique opportunity to share our expertise, offering those studying at Nord Anglia schools the chance to learn from the best that our two institutions can offer.
“We believe that the performing arts should have a significant role within today’s global educational environment. By working with Nord Anglia, we can reach students from around the world to cultivate their skills and help guide them in their future growth."
Our Boston school will also offer drama and dance curriculums over the coming years, and Nord Anglia and Juilliard are also launching a performing arts summer program. The first two-week program will be held in Switzerland in July 2016 and will include drama, dance, voice and instrumental tuition. More information on this program will be shared in the coming weeks.
The Juilliard School, founded in 1905, is a world leader in performing arts education. Juilliard’s mission is to provide the highest calibre of artistic education for gifted musicians, dancers and actors from around the world o that they may achieve their fullest potential as artists, leaders, and global citizens.
