British International School of Boston teacher Andrew Macrae kicked off a week of fundraising on Monday, August 10, completing the first of six hikes to the summit of Mount Washington in New Hampshire.

Macrae began the fundraiser, Hike for Hodgkins, earlier this summer, aiming to raise money for Dana Farber Cancer Institute by hiking the height of Everest- 29, 029 feet- by summiting Mount Washington six times in six days.

The project has already raised more than $13,000 and has been featured on the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute website and Facebook page.

The project is the result of the Macrae family’s year-long battle with cancer. His wife, Emily, also a local teacher, was diagnosed in the summer of 2014 with Hodgkin’s lymphoma. His mother was also diagnosed with cancer around the same time. While his mother passed away in early 2015, Macrae’s wife is currently cancer free, after months of treatment at Dana Farber.

Macrae continues his hikes throughout this week, through Saturday, August 15. He will be joined by several BISB families, co-workers and friends throughout the fundraiser, all of whom have been inspired by the project.
