BISB Middle School Students Take Home Three Model UN Awards

The school team brought back three awards from the conference, hosted by the United Nations Association of Greater Boston at Northeaster University. The students competed against more than 300 other young people from public and private schools around Greater Boston.

Students Shumraze F. (Year 9) and Elisabeth M. (Year 8) won best position paper for the General Assembly, writing about "equal labor rights" and representing Kyrgyzstan.

Alex B. (Year 9) and Victoria G. (Year 9) won Best Public Speakers for the General Assembly, also discussing "equal labor rights," representing Armenia.

Anahita V. (Year 8) and Simon R. (Year 9) won Best Negotiator for UN Woman. The topic was "empowering girls through education," representing Kyrgyzstan.

The students had worked for weeks with Model UN adviser Miss Ostasiewski, meeting every Tuesday to discuss various international topics. Students were assigned to represent United Nations country members ahead of the conference on November 22, and broke up into small groups to research their nations' roles in the international arena.

"The kids worked hard in and out of the club to research and understand the national and international perspectives of their assigned country," Miss Ostasiewski said Monday. "I am so impressed with the students' abilities to research and understand the dense topics that were discussed at the conference. The BISB students were able to control the discussions in each committee due to their knowledge and understanding of international issues."
