‘CHICAGO Musical’ is a social commentary on the capitalist mindset that perpetuated 1920s in the U.S. With a modern twist, we have worked hard to portrayed a play of greed, exploitation, manipulation, self-interest, and corruption.

After months of preparation and rehearsal, our students and teachers from across the school finally brought the classic 'Chicago' musical to life on the 7th and 8th of December.

Set in the legendary city during the roaring "jazz hot" 1920s, 'Chicago' tells the story of Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly, two rival vaudevillian murderesses. The American musical quickly gained international with its thrilling story, appealing jazz, swing, and contemporary pop-rock music and attractive choreography.

The annual production was a collaboration of students from Years 7 to 13, with assistance from a group of Primary students. Stage design, props, sound and lighting, orchestra, music, dance, and acting are all prepared and produced by our students under the guidance of the Performing Arts team. The outstanding performances in two nights reflected the dedication and hard work of over 91 students involved, as well as 18 teachers and staff.

Mrs. Catherine Somerville, Head of Performing Arts and Director of the production, said:

"We chose this show two years ago because of our love of the songs, humour, and Bob Fosse choreography, but we always envisioned a modern twist on the Broadway classic set in 1920’s. This ambitious project has significantly grown thanks to the support from the school community with 18 members of staff involved and a dedicated cast, many of whom find themselves in their final year of study balancing coursework deadlines. We are thrilled with the final show, which encapsulates our intention to move this story into a more modern setting and add a sense of playful empathy for characters who will do anything to get their moment in the limelight, because “that’s showbiz, kid.” On behalf of the Performing Arts department, we are all very grateful to work in supportive environment with wonderful resources that allow us to be creative and to challenge our talented student performers to sashay out their comfort zone with style.

Khanh Hoang (Year 13), played the character Billie Flynn also shared his thought after the 2-night performances.

A massive thank you to all of the students and teachers who contributed so much to this production, as well as their families and the school community, who came out to support the evening performances.

We will see you very soon at our next year's production.
