BIS students discuss thought-provoking ideas on global issues at UNISMUN Conference On the 11th and 12th of November, a group of 16 intrepid students embarked upon a journey to UNIS for the epic MUN conference annually held there.

On the 11th and 12th of November, a group of 16 intrepid students embarked upon a journey to UNIS for the epic MUN conference annually held there.

Our delegates were the youngest in the entire conference—some from Year 8—and the majority of them were first-timers. Bravo, BIS! What a wonderful reflection of your brave, ambitious spirit!

The delegates reflected the school very well, donning professional attire and adopting the formal language appropriate and customary for MUN ("this delegate believes," "The People’s Republic of China strongly advocates"), conducting themselves with much panache and sophistication.

Ms. Cooper and I were very proud to take our students on this very successful experience and were thrilled to hear how much they enjoyed it. See below for some of our students’ thoughts!

We also invited B, our Year 11 student, down for a quick interview.

NRO: So B how was your first MUN?

B: First, I was really nervous, but then, after getting to know all the other delegates, I found out that everybody was in the same situation as me, and after that, I felt included.

NRO: What specific skills or knowledge did you find challenging?

B: I learned to be more confident and believe in myself more by speaking to other delegates. You might think that you are being judged, but actually they were just listening to me; they were just evaluating what I had to say. I also learned organization skills from having to pre-write a resolution.

NRO: We had little preparation time; how was that for you?

B: At first, it was really overwhelming. But what we learned in the CCAs was rushed, but it was the backbone of the conference.

NRO: What are your thoughts on future MUN?

B: I would attend another MUN conference because of the friends I made along the way and the journey towards becoming an even better delegate.

NRO: What advice would you give to the next generation?

B: You can do anything if you set your mind to it and believe in yourself.
