How BIS Hanoi Year 9 students became Geography teachers for the day

How BIS Hanoi Year 9 students became Geography teachers for the day At the beginning of December, a group of Year 9 Geography students took on the challenge of teaching Year 6 pupils about the extraordinary world of earthquakes and volcanoes.

At the beginning of December, a group of Year 9 Geography students took on the challenge of teaching Year 6 pupils about the extraordinary world of earthquakes and volcanoes.

The volunteer students from Year 9 were tasked with planning, creating and delivering a lesson on natural disasters to Primary students in Year 6. The lesson would explore the different types of tectonic plate boundaries and how they create volcanic eruptions and earthquakes. There was also a focus on the South-East Asia region, where countries and their citizens are more likely to be affected by these tectonic hazards.

The Year 9 students showed incredible enthusiasm and dedication in preparing the lesson. Prior to delivering it, they assigned each other different roles and responsibilities to ensure that every part of the lesson was thoroughly prepared for. They also met on a daily basis, either during break time or before school, to ensure clear communication and progress in putting together the teaching powerpoint.

On the day of the lesson, the Year 9 students put their plan into action with confidence. They delivered an engaging lesson which made use of maps, videos and a recap quiz to bring learning to life for the Year 6 students. Having prepared their lesson for the virtual environment, the Year 9 students also made great use of the “main room” and “breakout room” features of our online learning platform.

The lesson was thoroughly enjoyed by the Year 6 students, who were excited by what they had learnt about natural disasters.

It was also a richly rewarding experience for the Year 9 students themselves.

As a school, it gives us immense pleasure to see our students teaching and learning together with peers from across Primary and Secondary. It shows that our students care for one another and are keen to support each other in their learning - at a time when helping one other has never been more important.

Congratulations to students in both Year 9 and Year 6 for this excellent collaboration. We look forward to seeing more fascinating student-led lessons next term!
