Excitement in the Performing Arts department reached new heights this week thanks to a range of fascinating activities - including a special dance workshop with Juilliard specialist Hilary Easton on Tuesday, and an invitation to this year’s Virtual Young Musician of the Year.
Our GCSE Dance Workshop with Juilliard specialist
This week, students in Year 9 were invited to celebrate their enthusiasm and talent for dance in a workshop led by our Juilliard Dance Specialist, Hilary Easton and Performing Arts teacher, Mrs Brawn.
We were blown away by our students' enthusiasm, with over 30 joining us online from their living rooms, bedrooms, kitchens, and other home spaces to discover more about the fascinating world of dance! Mrs Brawn hosted from our very own dance studio at BIS Hanoi, while Hilary joined us live from her apartment in New York City - proving that dance truly is a global subject!
Hilary introduced the students to the world-renowned Juilliard School of Performing Arts in New York - perhaps inspiring our students to take up their studies there one day? She then guided us through a Creative Classroom activity in which we explored stretching into space.
Mrs Brawn took the opportunity to acquaint our energetic dancers with the GCSE Dance course, which is a new feature in the Year 9 options this year. We studied a piece of professional Hip Hop dance, getting our bodies around a complex routine and developing our skills in critical analysis through thought provoking discussion about the work.
The students eagerly contributed to the workshop, demonstrating great enthusiasm and bringing positive energy to the class.
It was a truly memorable opportunity for our students to open their minds and step into the world of academic dance study. We couldn't have done it without our unique collaboration with the Juilliard programme.
Invitation to the Young Musician of the Year
Now in its third year, entries for the Nord Anglia Young Musician of the Year competition have now opened. If you play a musical instrument and are aged 7 or up, this is your opportunity to showcase your talent! BIS Hanoi have had two previous winners in recent years - Sam Hwang in 2020 on cello, and Eric Junpyo in 2021. Could 2022 be your year?
If you would like to enter, please visit the Global Campus page where you will find entry instructions and further information. If you have any questions about the competition, feel free to speak to any of the school music teachers. We are really looking forward to receiving your entries!
